OCR: FIRST PLANTAGENET ARMS GS OLDEN LIONS HAVE been part of the royal shield of England since William I conquered England in 1066. It is thought that he used the "two golden lions of his Norman Duchy" as the arms of his kingdom of England. In 1154, Henry II added the one golden lion of Aquitaine, land which his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, brought to their marriage. The shield shown here, seen on a stained-glass window in the parish church of Worsborough, Yorkshire, bears three golden lions on a red background. It was the royal shield from 1154 until 1340. The royal shield has changed many times since then, but the three golden lions remain. The present-day royal shield also bears a red lion on a golden background, and it is supported by a crowned lion and a unicorn. SEE ALSO
