OCR: INDIAN KALIGHAT T'HE KALIGHAT STYLE of popular painting was developed in Calcutta, India, between 1850 and 1920 by the Patua caste (social group or class) of traveling minstrels (musical performers) who settled around the Kalighat temple. Adapting their style of scroll painting, they painted mainly for the pilgrims, or travelers, who came to visit the temple. Most of their work featured gods and goddesses, but they also made satirical paintings. Cats feature frequently as caricatures of Vaishnavite priests, who were devotees of the Hindu (the dominant religion of India) god Vishnu. This painting has a moral message, rather than a religious one. Vaishnavite priests were not meant to eat fish or meat but were well known for doing so. The image of a cat eating a fish refers to the priests' hypocrisy. SEE ALSO
