OCR: LION'S PAW The sharp claws of this lion's foot are made of keratin (the same material as found in human nails). They are firmly attached to the distal (outermost) toe bones of the foot. Touch- sensitive nerve endings in the base of each claw send messages to the brain when the cat is using its claws to hold onto prey, or when it is climbing. Messages returning from the brain to the muscles that extend the claws ensure that the claws are sufficiently extended to maintain a firm grip. SEE ALSO
