OCR: DID YOU KNOW? Linking a cat's larynx and its skull is a set of bones called the hyoid apparatus. In large cats, such as tigers and lions, the hyoid apparatus contains cartilage (the same gristly tissue that makes up the human ear), making it flexible, and so enabling the cat to roar. In smaller cats, such as ocelots and domestic cats, the hyoid apparatus is rigid so the cat is unable to roar.
