  32. Welcome to the first edition of MST, "Mmos2 Source Tidbits", an elec-
  33. tronic digest to be published periodically. The main objective is to
  34. provide concise and timely information useful to anyone interested in
  35. multimedia happenings in the OS/2 environment.
  36.         
  37. Knowledge is power, they say. But for a software developer, big or
  38. small, knowledge is survival. MST is my feeble effort to gather and
  39. disseminate 'tidbits' of sources and resources for using, understanding
  40. and developing multimedia applications under OS/2 and its successors.
  41.       
  42. To be useful, the contents need to be short, to the point and provide
  43. sources for obtaining further information. Announcements from various
  44. vendors, availability of code and reviews of various kinds will be
  45. regular features. Special features may be tutorials, Q & As, new
  46. product ideas and the like.
  47.          
  48. I invite your comments, contributions and active participation. I am
  49. hoping that you all will jump in and make MST a great resource. Being
  50. electronic, it can be shaped as we go along. I intend to embed/provide
  51. KEY WORDS for all articles so that search and retrieval techniques can
  52. be used to ferret out information from back issues.

  63. MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION MANAGER TOOLKIT/2 BETA VERSION NOW AVAILABLE

  66. The IBM Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2 beta version CD-ROM
  67. is now available.  This beta release adds Software Motion Video support
  68. to Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 under OS/2.

  72. Both external software developers and IBM internal developers can order
  73. the Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2 beta version by calling
  74. 1-800-3IBMOS2 (1-800-342-6672) and ordering part number CD111092.
  75. There is a $15.00 charge which covers shipping and handling.  Visa and
  76. Mastercard are accepted.

  78. Minimum System Requirements
  79. -- OS/2 2.0
  80. -- An OS/2 2.0 compatible 386 or higher computer with
  81.    -- 8mb of system memory (12mb or real time video capture)
  82.    -- IBM XGA or IBM XGA-2 display adapter
  83.    -- OS/2 2.0 compatible CD-ROM Drive
  84.    -- IBM M-Audio Adapter or Creative Labs Soundblaster or
  85.       Soundblaster Pro audio adapter
  86.    -- OR an IBM Ultimedia computer with 8 megabytes of system
  87.       memory (12mb or real time video capture)

  90. [The above seems to indicate that this beta code will run only on IBM
  91. hardware. Though SoundBlaster is specified for the audio, requirement
  92. of XGA and XGA-2 may mean you will have to resort to IBM hardware. XGA-
  93. 2 seems to be where it is at as far as IBM is concerned. Until Radius
  94. comes up with an ISA XGA-2 Adapter, Ultimedia may be the best platform
  95. to check this code out. Especially if you want to play with motion
  96. video. It is fervently hoped that this will change. Any perception by
  97. developers that newer things will happen only on IBM hardware can
  98. seriously disrupt development efforts. - Editor]

  105. 'OS/2 PROFESSIONAL' MAGAZINE DEBUTS
  106.         
  107. A new slick magazine named 'OS/2 PROFESSIONAL' made its appearance at
  108. the recent COMDEX in Las Vegas and I recently received a copy by mail.
  109. It is a bimonthly, mailed to qualified subscribers (trade rag, per
  110. popular parlance). Can a popular subscription magazine be far behind? I
  111. wish IF Computer Media, the publishers of the magazine, great success
  112. ahead. (Not very thrilled about their name, though).

  115. Within its 64 pages, a couple of items could be of interest to us.
  116.       
  117. "Image & Vision for Business", a piece on multimedia by Hank Kliewer
  118. provided some interesting reading. Hank talks about exciting prospects
  119. for multimedia applications and gives some for-instances. Nothing
  120. specific about OS/2, though.
  121.        
  122. Strategically placed near this article is an advertisement from Digivox
  123. Corporation for their "SOUND IMPRESSION" (tm) for OS/2, Desktop Record-
  124. ing Studio, 16 Track Recorder/Mixer, MIDI and CD Player! Looks and
  125. sounds like a fun program to author with. On closer look, all screens
  126. look like Windows screens. So it is not clear if they have a native PM
  127. application or just Windows software which will run in WinOS/2. Still
  128. worth finding out about their OS/2 claim. Digivox can be contacted by

  140. A much wider range of CD-Rom makes and models will be supported by this
  141. latest release of beta driver set. One of the most notable features is
  142. that Single session, Kodak Photo-CD support is provided for those
  143. drives which support this standard.

  157. The beta code is available via various electronic means from IBM. It is
  158. also available from the popular ftp sites. It also appeared recently in
  159. comp.os.os2.binaries Usenet newsgroup.

  161. Trantor, DPT & BusLogic have their own drivers available for their
  162. brand of SCSI adapters. Always and Mylex are reported to be working on
  163. developing drivers.

  177. and the consequent clamor for support.
