WRI file that was installed in Program Manager along with Anne Hooper's Ultimate Sex Guide. PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS The Ultimate Sex Guide is a Microsoft Windows™ program. This means that the program runs in a window, and you can use all the Microsoft Windows™ management techniques to arrange windows on your screen. The one exception is that although the Ultimate Sex Guide window can be minimized, it cannot be resized. Extra information about the use of Microsoft Windows™ can be found in the Microsoft Windows™ Program Manager documentation and online Help. THE ULTIMATE SEX GUIDE RUNS VERY SLOWLY OR RUNS OUT OF MEMORY The Ultimate Sex Guide uses a large amount of your system memory to display illustrations and run animations. If it does not have access to enough memory, the Ultimate Sex Guide will run slowly or produce out-of-memory errors. In such cases, the following suggestions may help to improve the program's performance: 1. Shut down any other applications you are running. 2. Find out how much memory your computer has available by shutting down any open applications and then typing MEM and pressing enter at the DOS prompt (the Ultimate Sex Guide needs a minimum of 4MB of memory). If it has less than 4MB of memory, you will not be able to run the Ultimate Sex Guide properly until you add more extended memory. 3. If you are running Windows™ in Enhanced mode, set up a permanent Windows™ swap file of at least 4096K on your hard disk. Windows™ usually creates a temporary swap file, but this may be unavailable if your disk is full or fragmented. Consult your Windows™ documentation for more information. 4. Run a defragmentation program to clean up your hard disk. 5. Check your CD-ROM drive documentation to make sure that it is MPC-compatible. (An MPC level 1 compatible drive is defined as having an average seek-time of less than one second and can transfer data from the compact disc at 150K per second while using less than 40 percent of the CPU bandwidth.) PROBLEMS PLAYING SOUND INTERRUPTED SOUND If the sounds on the Ultimate Sex Guide are interrupted, there are several possible causes. A) You may need to increase the amount of memory available to the MCI sound driver. You can do this by carrying out the following steps: 1. In Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main program group. 2. Double-click the Drivers option to display a dialog box. 3. In the Installed Drivers list, double-click [MCI] Sound. 4. Increase the time to at least four seconds using the slider bar. If the time is already set to four seconds, increase it to even more. 5. Click OK. B) The Ultimate Sex Guide may be low on memory. Refer to the section called "The Ultimate Sex Guide runs very slowly or runs out of memory." C) You may be running another sound-playing application that is disrupting the sound of the Ultimate Sex Guide. This is usually a temporary clash that resolves itself. However, a few applications, such as some screen savers, may remove the sound from all other Windows™ applications. In such cases, close the application while running the Ultimate Sex Guide. DISTORTED SOUND If you hear sounds that are distorted or "fuzzy," the most likely cause is that your speakers are not of high quality. However, the problem could also be due to the software settings on your sound board. For example, if the sound card volume or "WAVE file input" is set to near its maximum level, it will produce distortion, just as it would on a stereo system. To change your sound board settings, consult your sound board documentation. NO SOUND If you cannot hear any sounds at all, make sure that: 1. You have a sound card installed. 2. The speaker is hooked up to the jack on your sound card (and not hooked up directly to the CD-ROM drive). 3. The volume is set to an audible level. The volume may be set with hardware, with software, or with both. Check your sound board documentation for details. 4. During Setup, special system software should be installed - and Windows™ should be restarted afterward to make this software work. If you did not restart Windows™, do so before attempting to run the guide again. If you chose not to install this software, run Setup again and then restart Windows™M. 5. Test the sounds with the Sound option in the Windows™ Control Panel. If the "test" button is grayed out, then your sound card is not installed properly and you should refer to its installation instructions. If you are able to test the sounds but still cannot hear anything, you may not have the correct sound driver files installed. Find out which ones you have by using the Drivers options in the Windows™ Control Panel and call the sound board manufacturer to check that they are the correct drivers and that there are no hardware conflicts. If your sound board came with your computer, call the computer manufacturer. PROBLEMS WITH VIDEO NO VIDEO If you get an error message when you try to play video, you may not have the correct video drivers installed. During Setup, special system software should be installed - and Windows™ should be restarted afterward to make this software work. If you did not restart Windows™, do so before attempting to run the guide again. If you chose not to install this software, run Setup again and then restart Windows™M. JUMPY VIDEO 1. You may have old versions of the video drivers installed in your system - refer to the above section on No Video and install the correct video drivers. 2. Your system may be running too slowly to play smooth video - refer to the above section "The Ultimate Sex Guide runs very slowly or runs out of memory." LARGE VIDEO PANEL You may have problems playing the large video panel on the base spec machine (386DX, 33MHz, 4MB RAM, single speed CD-ROM). If you encounter this problem, you will need a double-speed CD-ROM drive or a higher spec machine. (You can disable the large video panel functionality by deselecting Large Video in the Options window.) PRINTING AND COPYING PROBLEMS The Ultimate Sex Guide can be printed in greyscale, but if your printer prints only in black and white, you may need to upgrade your printer driver. Call the printer manufacturer or the dealer from whom you bought the printer. You can also print the Ultimate Sex Guide in color if you have a color printer. Bear in mind that the images have been designed for the best screen resolution (rather than a print reproduction), and so the printout will probably not match the quality you can see on the screen. Also, because the screens are large color pictures, printing may take several minutes or longer. If you have other applications running, try closing them before you print. DISPLAY PROBLEMS The Ultimate Sex Guide looks best in 256-color mode. If your computer has been configured to run with fewer colors, the image will be degraded and performance will also be affected. Running the product with more than 256 colors selected, such as the 65,000-color mode, will not result in any enhancement of the image quality, but will result in a performance penalty.
