It is about the size and shape of a pear and is situated behind the bladder and in front of the intestines in the pelvic cavity. During pregnancy the average uterus becomes about five times larger to accommodate the growing baby, and the weight of the uterus increases twentyfold. The lining of the uterus (the endometrium) is made up of layers of tissue and mucus-secreting cells.
