HIV invades certain cells of the immune system, gradually weakening the body's ability to fight other infections. HIV is transmitted by direct contact with contaminated bodily fluids, usually through sexual intercourse or by injection into the body, through intravenous drug use or blood transfusions. It is also possible to become infected via cuts and abrasions, and pregnant women with HIV may transmit the virus to their baby.
