It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which cannot live outside the human body, so it is virtually impossible to contract gonorrhea other than through sexual intercourse. The symptoms are different in men than in women, and over 30 percent of infected women are symptomless. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to infertility and severe arthritis in both men and women.
