HIV infection weakens the body's natural defenses, leaving a person too weak to fight off infections: The person may then develop AIDS. Most people with full-blown AIDS die within two years of developing the disease, often from a form of pneumonia or from a type of skin cancer known as Kaposi's sarcoma.
