CATALOGER - MAIN MENU
---------------------
CRSR UP/DOWN highlights option. RETURN selects.
F1/F3 - Displays directory in main menu window. "No Scroll" key pauses
display.
AUTO CATALOG
Load the data file and then select "Auto Catalog". Put the disk to be
cataloged into drive and enter the next disk number you are assigning.
The directory of the catalog disk is read. If you watch the display you
can see how many files are on the disk.
NOTE: The first time you enter "Auto Catalog" after loading a file, the
disk # of the last entry in the file will appear in the "Enter Disk #"
window. From then until another file is loaded, the last disk # you
entered will appear.
Windows:
Left - Disk name & directory of files.
Top - Options for entry.
Middle - Prompts/Messages/Input
Bottom - categories available.
Selecting categories:
There are forty preassigned categories available by paging through
four windows. Pressing RETURN will display the next window of
categories. To assign a category other than one of those displayed,
entering a "41" will bring-up a manual option.
F1/F3 A directory is available with the F1 or F3 key when the "select"
arrows are pointing to the top window.
+/- Used to page thru the directory in the left window. Previously
entered files will appear in red. This is not available when "Multiple
Entry" is selected.
The following is a description of the options in the top window:
Add - Adds the file name indicated in the left window.
Change - Moves the program name into the comments field so that a
more descriptive name can be assigned to the program name field. After a
file is entered, the name turns yellow in the current directory window.
Some programs fit into many categories. "Add" and "Change" can be used
again to enter a program additional times with different categories. A
red file name can be entered again ONLY with "Add" and "Change".
Entire - Every file name NOT previously entered from the yellow arrow
in the left window to the end of the directory, will be entered. For
this reason only one category can be selected.
Multiple - This option can only be selected when the yellow arrow is at
the top file in the left window. A "Multiple Options" menu will appear
in the top window. Use this option to quickly enter programs that have
the same category (i.e. DOC's). As each file is selected, it will be
turned yellow.
Once a program is entered into the data base, all editing must be done
with the File Editor. If you make a mistake, make a note of it and
correct the mistake with the File Editor.
MANUAL CATALOG
Same as in the File Editor.
SAVE DATA FILE
Same as in the File Editor.
LOAD DATA FILE
Same as in the File Editor.
EXIT CATALOGER
With this option you can exit the program to BASIC or load the File
Editor section. A "Data Changed" warning will remind you to save the
file if it has been changed. This can be done by answering "y" to the
"Resave...y/n" prompt.
CATALOGING SUGGESTIONS
----------------------
DISK NUMBERING
Since the sort routine performs a numeric sort in the disk # field, any
letter in the disk number will block the numeric sort when that letter is
a "prefix". However, if the letter is a "suffix" the sort routine will
recognize the number and will sort the field correctly.
You should look at how you currently store your disks. This may give
some indication as to what type of numbering system you need to develop.
Take a little time when starting to set-up a numbering system for your
library. If you label each disk box with a letter and use this letter as
a disk number suffix, the search routine in the file editor will be able
to locate all disks in a specific box. Programs in each box might be of
a similar category (i.e. games, utilities, music, etc.).
Within each box, the disks can be numbered sequentially. Use of a
"decimal point" in the disk number will have other advantages. It can be
used in the same manner as a library to allow books of a similar subject
to be inserted in the middle of a shelf. Another use for the decimal
point can indicate the format/side of disk.
Examples of disk numbers:
23A - Disk # 23 in box "A".
24A - Disk # 24 in box "A".
23.5A - Disk # 23.5 in box "A". (May have been cataloged sometime
after disk 23A. It will appear between disk # 23 and disk #
24...in box "A".)
103.1D - Disk # 103 in box "D" is side one of a 1541 formatted disk.
(.2 would indicate side 2)
65.7F - Disk # 65 in box "F" is 1571 format. (.8 could indicate 1581
format)
IMPORTANT CAUTION: Disk numbers with a single "e" followed by a number
may cause the program to crash (for example, 2E123 or E176). Disk
numbers like "145E" or "272EE3" will work fine.
RENAMING FILES
In order for a file to be renamed, it first must be loaded into the
File Editor. After loading the file, select "Configure" on the main
menu. Then select the file you have just loaded. At the "Change" or
"Delete" prompt select "Change". Enter the new file name and then answer
"y" to the "Rename only" prompt. It is suggested to rename a "Default"
file before you have added records, since the load process for a file
with only one record is faster.
LINE NUMBERS
FLEXI-CAT 128 doesn't store entries by record number like relative
files. When an entry is added the next available memory location is
used. The line numbers only give the user a reference for an entry when
editing. When you use sort, delete, or insert, some or all of the
entries in the file may have different line reference numbers. For this
reason make sure the entry you are deleting is the one you wanted.
Look at the entry before answering "y" to the prompt "are you sure?"
when you are deleting an entry.
WHEN TO ADD COMMENTS
FLEXI-CAT 128 will store 33,000 characters in memory for each file. If
you know what comment you plan to enter beforehand, enter the comment
when cataloging the program. Otherwise, add entries to a file until 50%
to 60% of the memory is filled. If you do not plan to enter extensive
comments, add entries until it is approximately 70% full. Then use the
File Editor to print out a list of the entries with line numbers and make
hand written notes on the print out for later editing.
Filling the entire comment field in each entry will use about 45% of
the available memory. If the file does reach maximum before all the
comments are entered, use the utility program to split the file, then
continue adding comments to either file.

UTILITY PROGRAM
---------------
As comments are added to files, a file may grow to the limit of its
memory. In order to add more comments, the file has to be split.
Sometimes an entire file or a portion of a file may need to be combined
with other files. The Utility Program will make
