L O N D O N T O W N
by John O'Hare, Tim Borion, Sal Oeper, Reiner Richter and Fender Tucker
We don't publish Public Domain programs on LOADSTAR but this one, a
British version of the popular board game Monopoly, is so good we couldn't
resist. Reiner Richter, a master programmer from Downunder, sent us the
program after he modified it to work in 80-columns. I changed the name to
LONDONTOWN, added CONTROL80 and a trapped input, and changed the font.
It's in the public domain so you can copy it and pass it around all you
want. I think those of us who have grown up with the Atlantic City version
of Monopoly (Boardwalk and Park Place, etc.) will get a kick out of playing
with the London place names.
The program first asks if you want to use the "auction rule". This rule
of the game states that if a player lands on a property and doesn't want to
buy it, it is auctioned off to the highest bidder. If you don't use the
"auction rule", then when a player lands on a property and doesn't want it,
the player's move is over. The property isn't sold.
The "Free Parking Jackpot" option means that when a player lands on Free
Parking he collects $500.
Then the program asks for two players' names. LONDONTOWN is a two-
player game; you don't play against the computer. There are no instructions
built into the program and I'm not up to recreating them here. If you don't
know the rules to MONOPOLY, you're needed as a juror in California for the
trial of some guy named Simpson. Don't worry, it'll be a simple, low-key
trial.
The game is played exactly as it is in the US version, just with
different streets and railroads. You press R to roll the dice. Press T to
make a transaction before rolling. If you press Q you will be returned to
LOADSTAR 128. Everything is prompted. Unfortunately, there is no SAVE GAME
IN PROGRESS feature.
The transaction menu consists of:
R Review all properties
L List all properties
B Build houses/hotels
S Sell properties to other player
M Mortgage menu
D Display title deeds
RETURN to the game
SHIFT X End game
To anyone familiar with the game of Monopoly those should all be self-
explanatory.
I hope you enjoy having this super board game on computer, especially in
the British version. Since this is a PD program, a good BASIC programmer
could fairly easily change it over to Spanish, French or even Esperanto
versions. I've heard there are several translations of Monopoly around the
world.
And finally, since Parker Brothers has produced and owned the rights to
Monopoly ever since its invention back during the Depression, we recommend
that every home have the real board game in it. It's great being able to
play it on computer (where banking is a snap) but for an all-night, dog-eat-
dog Monopoly slugfest, you can't beat the Parker Brothers game right out of
the box.
