M A S T E R P L A N
by Robert B. Cook
Remember, in the early days of home computing, the hype that your new
PC would give you more free time and save you lots of money? Well, we found
that was a bunch of hooey. Computers use up time and cost money -- but they
sure are fun. But that doesn't mean we can't at least try to save time and
money with our computers and this is what MASTERPLAN attempts. It's a
calendar program, an appointment book, a diary of sorts and a listmaker.
Just about everything can be printed out or saved to disk. If you use
MASTERPLAN, you will find your life more organized and manageable. And you
probably won't forget anniversaries and birthdays as often.
MASTERPLAN uses the 80-column screen and the powerful data-storing
capabilities of the C-128 in true 90's fashion. The first thing to do is
choose Week-At-A-Glance or Initialize File from the main menu. Either will
ask you to enter the month, day and year of your choice. Then you'll be
asked to choose the hours for the weekly calendar. The hours are in
one-hour increments for 12 hours. Scan the hours by pressing the left or
right cursor then accept the hours by pressing RETURN. The default hours
are 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening, but of course change these to suit
your schedule.
WEEK-AT-A-GLANCE
----------------
If you choose Week-At-A-Glance then you'll go directly to the weekly
calendar, Sunday through Saturday, for the first week of that month. In
other words, if you choose July 26, 1992, the week that is first displayed
is the week beginning with July 5, the first Sunday in July. You can
quickly move to the week of July 26 by pressing F3 three times. The help
box in the lower left corner tells you how to move the cursor, move from
week to week and month to month and enter, cut, paste and clear messages.
To enter a message for an hour, place the cursor over the date and hour
and press RETURN and you're in the message mode. There is a help box for
the message mode in the bottom left corner showing you the keys to press and
what they'll do. Note that when you enter a message and press RETURN, a
purple bar lights up by that hour. This indicates that you have a message
there.
When moving by the week or month a bell will sound when the limits of
the calendar are reached. You can't move backward in time from the first
week displayed, but you can move forward up to a year. To move outside the
range, go back to the main menu, save your file, then choose Initialize File
and enter a new date. Initializing erases any messages from memory, so make
sure to save before doing it.
The Week-At-A-Glance section is the heart of MASTERPLAN, and if you are
a busy person printing out your weekly schedule can save you a lot of
heartache and missed opportunities.
UPCOMING EVENTS
---------------
This section of MASTERPLAN is where you keep track of important annual
events like anniversaries, birthdays, vacations, etc. If you want your
events sorted on paper, prefix each entry with a date. For example
9/28 Aunt Bertha's birthday
The events will not be sorted on screen -- only on the printout. In order
to print your event list, you use the PRINT UTILITIES option from the main
menu, described below.
Move the cursor using the CRSR keys. Press RETURN to edit or enter an
item. To put a space between two items press INST. CLR will remove an item
from the list.
TO-DO LIST
----------
This is where you list all those jobs that you've been putting off.
Prefix each item with a number from 1 to 9 in order of its importance as
compared to other items. The items will print-out by number, 1-9, not by
the order of the list. The hot keys are the same as the ones used in the
Events section.
LOAD/SAVE FILE
--------------
All of the SEQuential files on the disk are displayed. If the file
you want to load was not created by this program you'll receive an error
message. The program reads and writes files to disk, rather than BLOADs and
BSAVEs them, so the load and save are not real fast.
Keep in mind that the ESCape key backs you out of almost anywhere in
this program.
DISK UTILITIES
--------------
You can view a directory, delete and rename files and view a sequential
file to check its contents. The disk device number may be changed in
software and/or at the drive.
PRINT UTILITIES
---------------
Here you can print a report for a whole month, your Event List or your
To-do List. You can also set up your printer to print in almost any mode
it's capable of.
Print Report will print the messages for any month you choose. Use the
up and down CRSR keys to scan the months then press RETURN. A bell will
sound when you reach the limits of your year. The print-out lists each
message on a daily basis. Event and To-Do lists are printed the same way.
Events may be printed for all months or for any month you choose. Use the
up and down CRSR keys to scan the months then press RETURN.
Set the device number and send control codes to the printer using
Configure. Enter each code as a number from 1 to 255 or as a letter from a
to z, lower case only, then press RETURN to send it to the printer. Exit by
pressing the ESCape key.
Where do you get the printer codes? From your printer manual. The
codes are sent one at a time as you enter them and are not remembered by the
program. Your printer will remember them though. If you've placed your
printer in italic mode and want to change back to the default upright mode,
you can either send the code to switch back or turn your printer off and
back on again.
MASTERPLAN is designed to be easy to use for the casual home planner as
well as the on-the-go executive. It has more power than you'll probably
need but if you do, you've got it. Play with it a while to get the hang of
the screens and features and then put it to use in your life. You'll find
that a nicely formatted printout of things to do and remember work better
than hastily scribbled Post-It notes. The program is large enough to handle
the job but is small enough to load quickly. It works with JiffyDOS and
WarpSpeed. There is no REU support but the data storage capabilities of the
C-128 are large enough for even the busiest schedule.
Plan ahead with MASTERPLAN.
