  13.      Perhaps your readers could use the following information, taken from
  14. THE C128D CHAGRIN CONTROLLER'S GUIDE, by Mojo Nes, Ph.B.?

  16.                     REDESIGN YOUR C128D IN FIVE EASY STEPS
  17.  
  18.      Do the following and you will be able to easily reset your computer
  19. and drive, switch modes on your WarpSpeed, and have your IconTroller cord
  20. reach properly.
  21.  
  22. 1.  Turn the C128D 90 degrees to the left so that the front is now the left
  23. side.
  24.  
  25. 2.  Position a small mirror on the left side, just behind the drive
  26. activity light so that the light can be seen from your computing position.
  27.  
  28. 3.  Cut the eraser from a pencil, apply rubber cement to the cut end, and
  29. glue it to the reset button which is now in front of you.
  30.  
  31. 4.  Using a sharp knife cut a 1/8 x 1/8 x 3/8 inch section from a rubber
  32. eraser, apply rubber cement to one of the small ends, and glue it to the
  33. drive reset switch which is to the left of the reset switch.

  35. 5.  Plug the C128D power cord into a switchable source, reach waaaay around
  36. to the right, and turn on the power.  From now on, use the switch on your
  37. power source.

  42. LS:  Now you tell me!  Both of my arms have gained an inch or two in length
  43. since getting a C128D (losing a couple of inches in girth because of missed
  44. meals and aggravation) and I've developed a permanent crick in my neck from
  45. peering around the right to find the drive reset hole.  At least my voice
  46. has returned to normal.  I tore a couple of vocal cords cursing the
  47. designers of the C128D the first few weeks I had one.

  49. I'm sure seasoned readers of LOADSTAR will recognize a tinge of
  50. tongue-in-cheekiness in your letter, but you're right about the C128D's
  51. unforgivable design.  If any readers out there have more tips for the C128D
  52. CHAGRIN CONTROLLER'S GUIDE, send them in and I'll be happy to spread them
  53. around.

  58.      I was going back through my issues of LOADSTAR 128 using the Commodore
  59. Key and L and found that when I went from #8 to #9 it won't load in the
  60. 80-column mode.  It's no big deal, but is this something we will have to
  61. live with?

  65. LS:  I'm afraid so.  When Jon Mattson wrote the new 80-column LOADSTAR 128
  66. menu he purposely kept many of the same formats, just so you could move
  67. from issue to issue by pressing L (or CMDR-L on the pre-#9 issues).  The
  68. file that lists what's on the disk is called "features" and is almost
  69. exactly the same, format-wise, from issue to issue.  However, the text
  70. files are now formatted for 80-columns rather than the previous ones for
  71. 40-columns.  That's why Jon had to have each issue boot up in the mode it
  72. was written in.  I'm sure everyone likes the new menu better than the old,
  73. but it would have looked weird for the text to only take up the left side
  74. of the screen.

  76. The whole idea of having an L to load another LOADSTAR is to keep you from
  77. having to wait while our menu program, "presenter.128", is loaded.  All
  78. that's loaded is "features".  I admit I don't use CMDR-L very often.  Since
  79. I have JiffyDOS installed on my C128D, I generally just reboot when I
  80. switch from issue to issue.  It only takes a few seconds.

  85.       I put out three brief newsletters a month using Newsroom and would
  86. like to use the graphics from Print Shop and Parsec in them.  Is there any
  87. way to convert between Newsroom, Print Shop and Parsec?

  92. LS: There are probably converters around that will do the job, but I don't
  93. know of one offhand.  It sounds like something we would like to publish, so
  94. if any of our readers have access to the programs and the ML skills to make
  95. a fast conversion program, by all means send one in.

  100.      In the Zero Page SONGSMITH-player article on issue #9 you mentioned
  101. that the "w." (instrument) files always load into the same place, so they
  102. can be simply BLOADed into memory.  Partly true and partly false.  They DO
  103. load into the same place anytime you want to use the 128 player
  104. (7000-7151), but it is not the same place that SONGSMITH usually uses
  105. (53096-53247).  Thus, the full BLOAD syntax must be used.

  109. I chose location 7000 so that the instrument file would fit snugly on top
  110. of the player and under the normal BASIC area (below 7168).  This has an
  111. extra benefit for short songs (less than 1186 bytes): they can be BLOADed
  112. into the 4864-6049 range so that the entire player-song combination uses no
  113. BASIC memory at all and can be saved as one file (BSAVE"music",B0,P4864 TO
  114. P7152).

  120. things you write for LOADSTAR.  I realize this is patting my own back, but
  121. getting you to help me out with LOADSTAR 128 was one of the most brilliant
  122. moves I've ever made.

  127.      Congratulations!  LOADSTAR 128 #9 was the best one yet.  The new menu
  128. is excellent and the programs are great.  My son, who is on vacation from
  129. Vanderbilt University, says that FERN VALLEY is the type of program he uses
  130. in his study of chaos.  We spent several hours playing with the program.

  136. S., Ian A. and the others who help me with LOADSTAR 128.  When I was in
  137. college, we didn't "study" chaos, we lived it.  Of course, that was before
  138. the advent of accessible computers.  I'm sure chaos is something that is
  139. literally impossible to study without computers -- it's obvious that
  140. nothing but a computer could do something like FERN VALLEY.
