ONE MAN AND HIS DROID
Program by Clive Brooker
C64 Port by Adrian Sheppard
Text by Dave Moorman
"Do androids dream
of electronic sheep?"
--Original title of
Bladerunner--
Over the years, the C-64 was my
"programming machine." But for my son,
Matt, it was a great game machine. He
created a dozen or more football teams
and played a huge tournament with
Fourth and Inches.
But for sheer joystick mayhem, he
booted up One Man and his Droid. Here
is a hectic "think" game for all ages.
The first phase of each level is a
very nasty maze, which you [must] get
through in order to herd your
electronic sheep.
And herd you must, for the sheep
move in a particular way. The job for
your droid is to guide the little
rascals, drill holes through walls,
and in general, get them to the
receiving chute
[IN THE PROPER ORDER]
as defined at the side of the small
screen.
You have various modes for your
Droid, which you access by messing
with your joystick and fire button.
Far be it from me to spoil the sense
of frustration and discovery you will
experience learning this game. "No,
Dad," Matt would say, "it's not the
game. It's YOU. You have to learn how
to make the droid work for you."
Impossible? Matt says, "Not like
totally." But then, he was 14 when he
played this one!
Technically, this game uses some
excellent techniques to smoothly
scroll and present the various sheep
and mazes. Published by Mastertronics
in 1985, it is an early example of
what the C-64 does best. Clever,
demanding games at a measely one
megahertz.
So enjoy this blast from the past.
