The Statue of the 3 Commandos by the
military training grounds near
Achnacarry and south of Inverness.
This was set up after WW2 to honor the
commandos who had gathered here to
plan for the war.

The walkway to the Eilean Donan
Castle. This is a fabulous castle
built on the ruins of a former Pictish
fort, near the Kyle of Lochalsh, which
is a narrow meeting of land that sits
on the gateway to the Isle of Skye.
Its name comes from a religious hermit
named St. Donan. It was conquered by
four English frigates in 1719 and sat
in ruin for the next 200 years.

Out for a drive. I took this picture
as I was driving down one of the
Scottish roads (yes you read that
right, just don't tell the highland
Bobbies!) It was fun driving a
stick-shift on the wrong side of the
road. It was a very nice, sunny day
when this was taken.

Behold, St. Andrews Church (Scottish
Episcopal) in Fort William, south of
Inverness and about 110 miles north of
Glasgow. It's beautiful, and has a
nice name!

Here is the Glenfinnan Monument
located near Lochaber and Glenalladale
on the Isle of Skye. Here is where
'Bonny Prince Charlie' as the Scots
called him : Prince Charles Edward
Stuart, raised the standard,
signifying the Jacobite uprising
against the English on August 19, 1745
at the head of Loch Shiel. 'Jacobite'
means that they supported King James
II for the throne.

Indeed, this was partly a civil war
for the Scots, but also, many European
powers were involved for their own
ends. In 1815, a man named Alexander
Macdonald of Glenalladale,
commissioned the tower. The Scots
eventually conquered the British
island down to Derby, which is around
100 miles north of London. The English
did push them back leading eventually
to the next picture...

The Culloden Battlesite and Graveyard.
This is the place where the fateful
and horrible battle occured on April
16, 1745 that sealed the fate of the
Scots at the hands of the English. My
mother called it 'the death of our
country'. The Culloden Moor was
favorable to the side with the most
artillery. The 'highland charge' was
unsuccessful in scaring or defeating
the English.
