  6.     The big news of the month is the
  7. publication of [On the Edge: The]
  8. [Spectacular Rise and Fall of]
  9. [Commodore], by Brian Bagnall. Here is
  10. a book that details the history of
  11. Chuck Peddle, MOS Technology, Jack
  12. Tramiel, and the other notables who
  13. put the C-64 on the map. Brian has
  14. graciously permitted us to publish two
  15. sample sections of the book here in
  16. LOADSTAR.
  17.  
  18.     The reading is fascinating. And
  19. now we have one "authoritative" source
  20. of information on the inner workings
  21. of this enigmatic company.
  22.  
  23.     After reading the book, I realized
  24. that Commodore and the C-64 was to the
  25. history of computers as Alexander the
  26. Great was to the ancient world. With a
  27. short-lived rush, the C-64 "conquored"
  28. the home computer market -- and paved
  29. the way for a PC in every home. There
  30. is more -- but I am out of space here.

  39.     I just got a program from Robin
  40. Harbron that will change the way we do
  41. multi-media presentations here at the
  42. Tower -- and offer new possibilities
  43. to all programmers!

  45.     The module is an IRQ LOADER. That
  46. means, with this ML code, a program
  47. can load a file while an IRQ-driven
  48. routine continues to operate. To put
  49. it in practical terms, the music can
  50. continue to play while a graphic file
  51. is loaded and displayed.

  53.     The code is from Lasse Oorni and
  54. other Elite Euro Dudez. They have had
  55. such a loader for their PAL platform
  56. for years. The opening of the Role
  57. Playing Game NEWCOMER is a multi-
  58. media spectacle as screen after bit-
  59. mapped screen tells the story while a
  60. throbbing song plays.

  62.     I did not realize how far the
  63. technology had progressed until a
  64. month or so ago, while looking at
  65. Scene World on my real C-64, I pressed
  66. <Y> at the [Fastloader?] prompt. And
  67. lo! and behold, the music did not stop
  68. for a load. That's when I started
  69. investigating. I realized I was
  70. probably not up to the task of making
  71. the code LOADSTAR-style. The alpha
  72. version came in today. We will have
  73. the fully documented code and a demo
  74. in the next issue!
