"I don't care if you have a KIM 1 or
a Pentium 5 Gig. It is the same thing.
A von Neumann machine is a von Neumann
machine is a von Neumann machine."

John von Neumann was born in Hungary
to a non-practicing Jewish family.
Fortunately, he was invited to
Princeton University in 1930, and
worked with the Manhattan Project
during the war.
In the 1930's, he was Turing's
doctorate supervisor, though Turing's
model does not seem to have directly
influenced von Neumann's computer
design. The von Neumann architecture
is used in virtually every
commercially available machine --
from home computers to super
computers.

He created the field of cellular
automata, constructing the first self-
replicating automata with pencil and
graph paper. The term "von Neumann
machine" also refers to self-
replicating machines. He proved the
most efficient way large-scale mining
operations -- such as mining the
entire moon or the asteroid belt --
would be through the exponential
expansion of such self-replicating
machines.
He is also credited with the
invention of the Merge Sort algorithm
in 1945, and is remembered as the
Father of Game Theory.
