  2.   Hollerith took the idea and created
  3. cards which were punched with Census
  4. information. His Tabulating Machine
  5. pressed metal pins against a card,
  6. falling through where holes were
  7. punched into beads of mercury,
  8. completing an electrical connection
  9. and ratching a counter wheel.

  11.   Being a 19th Century entreprenuer,
  12. Hollerith patented his invention, then
  13. leased it to the Census Bureau. The
  14. 1890 Census was tabulated in one year,
  15. at a savings of $5 million.

  17.   Hollerith formed his Tabulating
  18. Machine company, which was purchased
  19. by Thomas J. Watson to become part of
  20. International Business Machines in
  21. 1914.
