STATES is a game for two people
with two joysticks, however, a
Practice Mode allows you to hone your
identification skills. The object is
to be the first person to recognize
the shape of a state appearing on the
screen.
Each round begins with a completely
white screen. Little by little various
pixels will turn black until a state
begins to take form. The first person
to press the fire button and correctly
name that state wins that round and
receives one point. Ten points are
needed to win the game.
When trying to identify the state
keep in mind that the relative size
of a state plays no part here. In
fact, each state can appear in one of
three sizes. That means Rhode Island
could take up most of the screen,
while Alaska might appear only in the
center.
To win a round, press the joystick
button as soon as you think you know
which state is being displayed. A
list of 48 states will pop up on the
screen. (Colorado and Wyoming do not
appear because look they look too
much like each other.) Move the
joystick in any direction and the
first state will be highlighted. Use
the joystick to move the highlight to
the state you want and press the
button.
If this is the correct state, the
highlight will turn green and you
receive one point.
If you choose the wrong state, the
highlight will turn red and the game
will return to the current round. As
a penalty, you will not be allowed to
name the state again until your
opponent has a try. If your opponent
fails, then you can try again while
your opponent is locked out. This
continues until someone correctly
identifies the state.
OPTIONS
Press F3 to enter the options
menus. F7 returns you to the main
menu.
F1 toggles between easy and hard
game. Easy game displays the states
only in the normal way. In the hard
game, the states are not only
displayed normally but also can be
upside down, backwards or both.
F2 toggles between a one or two
person game. In the one person game,
you are player 1 and the computer is
player 2. Try to recognize the state
before the computer and don't make a
mistake! Unlike the regular two
person game, if you choose the wrong
state the computer automatically
receives one point. The computer, on
the other hand, will always pick the
right state. It's a little slow
sometimes, other times it will be
very quick.
F3 toggles between one or two
joysticks. If you only have one
joystick, this option will allow
player 1 to use the keyboard while
player 2 uses the joystick in port 2.
Player 1 will then press the spacebar
in place of the joystick button and
use the cursor keys to get around the
list of states.

[DAVE'S AFTERWORD]: Dennis is a good
programmer and sport! When I first saw
this program, I really liked the look.
But I wanted some more options --
single player games are good for
LOADSTARites. So I made some
suggestions, and Dennis got cracking.
The result is a great, unique game of
the LOADSTAR Independent Programmer
Tradition.
