Once upon a time, computers were
relatively simple. Having a machine
with 64K memory, 16 colors, and 3
sound synthesizers was a marvel.
Thousands of programmers and dozens of
publishing companies scrambled to
develop interesting, challenging games
for a hungry market.
Since the hardware was somewhat
limited, the designers had to try to
find unique metaphors for their games.
Mazes, Shoot-'em-ups, Grab-and-Runs,
Text Adventures, and Puzzles lined the
walls of arcades and found their way
onto 5.25 inch floppy disks.
This game is a combination of two
sub-genres: Like PacMan, your
challenge is to eat dots before BIG
DOTS eat you. But the maze moves, not
unlike the deadly traffic and logs of
Frogger.
Today, the arcades are filled with
KunFu Bullpucky, with amazing 3-D
video and theatre surround sound. The
software requires an army of
programmers, musicians, graphic
artists, and marketing moles, spending
six to ten months whacking out code
(and whatever it is marketing moles
whack!).
I guess the idea of a good idea,
simply and excellently executed is
obsolete. Except at LOADSTAR!
