D I S K O V E R Y
by Dave Moorman
If the music for this issue sent
your stabbing around for the <S> key,
then you have some idea how much I do
not like the idea of going to war with
Iraq. I believe that war is sometimes
necessary. World War II was necessary.
Korea [might] have been necessary.
Vietnam was necessary only in that the
United States needed the experience of
losing.
Going to war must be only after
all other avenues have been completely
exhausted -- including "living with
it." There must be a preponderence of
evidence, and we must not be eager to
accept the evidence.
As one preacher put it at a
lecture at the end of January: "What
part of 'Thou shall not kill' don't we
understand? War is Evil. War can be a
necessary Evil, but its Evil is still
present. The only way to exorcize the
Evil is with post-war programs such as
the Marshall Plan and MacArthur's
Japanese reconstruction. That is to
say, the victors have a burden.
And our history shows that we
don't do "burden" well. We like to be
more like a super-hero: Kill the Evil
Genius and leave. We have already done
that in Afganistan.
And -- for all my gripes, I cannot
help but be proud of my country and
our traditions. The Star Spangled
Banner speaks of strength and
survival. This emulation of Jimi
Hendrix playing at Woodstock is
symbolic of America and the freedom to
protest.
Anyway -- those are my views. You
certainly can have your own. You might
even be right.
This issue is full of good old
stuff. I have been searching the Web
for those video games and amusements
from long ago. I realize that there
are copyright laws. At this point, who
cares? One look at my pockets, and any
big corporation lawyer will realize
that even sending a letter would be a
waste of a stamp.
I'm in a crusty mood. Enjoy the
issue!
