LOADSTAR HOME TOWER NEWS
by Dave Moorman
Home Tower users are lucky! On
their new, emense hard drive is a disk
image called UTILITY.D81. In fact,
when they boot up the Tower, device 15
is pointing to UTILITY.D81.
That is my own, all purpose
Utility disk. I put it on drive 9 with
VICE, so that most programs I will
need are there, ready for easy access.
Programs like Edstar and Mr.Edstar.
Lee Novak's Dissolver, Linker, and
Packer. Art programs like Sprite On!,
Doodle, Advanced OCP, and STB
Print. And my favorite assembler is
there, BASSEM.
Now, there are a lot of other
utilities useful in the production of
LOADSTAR that probably won't interest
you. But now you have it, the good,
the bad, and the ugly!
Just had an email from Nick
Copland, whose 64HDD drives the Tower.
Nick is working on a new connection/
program called PowerLoader that will
make access 30 to 50 times faster.
Let me see if I got that right: 30
to 50 times faster. The Tower runs a
little faster than a 1541 but not as
fast as a CMD HD. But kick it into
gear with PowerLoader and --
[Streaming Video!] "Streaming"
means that the program doesn't have to
stop to load. With PowerLoader, the
data just keeps on flowing. Nick is
working on conversion programs for the
PC which will make AVI computer videos
C-64 VIC II compatible. This will all
require a parallell cable and perhaps
a new ROM chip for the C-64.
What is exceedingly cool about it
all is that this new technology is the
result of careful thought about
existing technology. Nick and LOADSTAR
are both dedicated, in our own ways,
to break the death grip of commercial
consumerism. Nick finds new ways of
using what the economy calls junk. We
find new ways to entertain you with
our obsolescence.
Another note: Even though this
version of 64HDD is freeware, we pass
along a royalty to Nick for the use of
64HDD in the Tower. Since the Home
Tower is a commercial venture, we
think it is only fair to compensate
Nick for his genius.
But now he has sent me coupons to
send to Home Tower owners, good for
$10 off on other and future 64HDD
software or hardware.
If you have your Tower -- again
Congratulations. If you have been
waiting, remember:
January 10, 2003
is the end of the $200 price for the
hardware Tower package (hardware/
cable/software). After the tenth, it
will go up to $250.
