  7.     The Arkansas River valley is a
  8. good place to raise alfalfa. The hay
  9. is now bailed in huge bails and
  10. trucked all over the prairie for
  11. cattle feed. Several dairies just over
  12. the state line in Kansas take
  13. advantage of plentiful hay, and milk
  14. thousands of cows each day. The
  15. valley is also a great place to raise
  16. thorough-bred horses.

  18.     Much of the valley farmland is
  19. irrigated. "Above the ditch", farmers
  20. raise winter wheat and milo. To the
  21. south are miles and miles of ranch
  22. land.

  30.     Called the "Cathedrals of the
  31. Plains," the grain elevators of Kansas
  32. and Eastern Colorado can be seen ten
  33. miles before any other sign of a town.

  35.     This year, our area is in the
  36. second year of a drought (pronounced:
  37. "drouth"). With an average annual
  38. rainfall of only 14 inches a year,
  39. this land is technically a desert.
  40. Unless we see extraordinary early
  41. winter moisture, we won't make 14
  42. inches in two years.

  44.     Market prices are driven by the
  45. law of supply and demand. As one old
  46. timer put it: "When I have a supply,
  47. there's no demand!"

  54.     Little towns like Holly just
  55. cannot keep up with the big city. In
  56. some ways, we don't want to. But
  57. amenities such as a movie theater
  58. cannot do a profitable business.

  60.     A decade ago, when the proprieter
  61. of the Holly theater decided to
  62. retire, the Town bought the building
  63. and leased it to a family for a
  64. dollar. When that family decided to
  65. give it up, the citizens banded
  66. together. Three nights a week, a paid
  67. projectionist runs the film -- while
  68. volunteers sell concessions.

  70.     If you are running a little late,
  71. don't worry. The movie won't start
  72. until everyone has popcorn and a
  73. drink!

  80.     I hope you have enjoyed your tour
  81. as much as we enjoy living here. The
  82. one structure we could not photograph
  83. is the Mighty LOADSTAR Tower. The
  84. clear blue sky reflecting in the 215
  85. stories of mirrored glass makes the
  86. building virtually invisible.

  88.     Another theory is that a 215 story
  89. skyscraper in a puny little town is
  90. just too unbelieveabe. The eyes see,
  91. but the brain refuses to comprehend.

  93.     We consider it a fairly good form
  94. of security. On the otherhand, we
  95. have been forced to open up the 20th
  96. to 50th floors so crop dusters can fly
  97. through.
