Program and Text by Lee Novak
2001 was a hectic year for me.
The excitement of September 11th kept
me glued to the TV for a few days,
but that wasn't the main distraction.
At the tender age of 27, I finally
moved out of my parents' basement!
Apartments suck. I moved straight
into a litte house which I bought
from a girl I used to work with. It
only cost $10,000 (Canadian!) so you
can imagine what a shack it is. But
hey, it's mine, and there's nobody
around to bang on my walls or roof.
Now that I got a place, I bought
all the stuff I promised to - all
thanks to the good folks at VISA! In
my 11x12 ft living room is a fancy
office desk and monitor stand, plus a
mock-leather office chair to work at.
Credit also got me a new TV and
entertainment stand, and replaced my
old childhood bed. (Who peed on it?)
What's all this mean? Besides
being in MASSIVE debt, that is. Well,
I've got the computer setup I've
always wanted. Papers of my current
project are all over the place, and
command summary sheets are taped to
the walls. I am ready to work.
Just today, I'm buying a cheap
laptop computer in order to keep
working on my C-64 projects at my
"real" job. I spend a lot of time
waiting for deliveries at KFC. Now, I
can do something productive besides
playing Sega Genesis there.
Dave's gonna provide the emulator
and idiot-proof instructions on how
to use it. This is scary. I don't
know if this machine will help me
write programs faster. The only thing
written in 2001 was Mr. Mouse 3, and
that's just for programmers!
I'd love to ask you to renew your
subscription just on faith, but it's
time to offer a little more. I've put
together four screen shots of games
in the early stages, one of which is
nearly done.
PLUMB CRAZY 2: The sequel to Dave
Moorman's plumbing simulator started
back in 1997. The original graphics
were improved upon, but the sound
couldn't be. I needed a simultaneous
music and sound effects system. PC2
will be the first program to use my
upcoming QUICKSOUND driver.
GHOUL'S GOLD: Originally meant to
be a Quick & Dirty maze game, this
program has become an updated version
of the old VIC-20 program RAID ON
FORT KNOX. The classic "grab the gold
and skedaddle" action returns with
new mazes of varying difficulty, and
or course, GHOULS!
ROLLERBALL: This slide-the-tiles
game features a metal ball that rolls
along the grooved playfield. The goal
of this game is to reach the exit
after completing specific tasks. The
trick to making this game fun will be
making it easy enough to control the
ball in the early levels.
THE CRUSADERS: I've wanted to
show you this adventure game ever
since that screen mockup was made a
few years back. Imagine an adventure
game with smooth scrolling, music and
sound effects, sprite characters,
with castles, towns and caves to
explore. The tools needed to write
this adventure game are all in the
works. It will happen in 2002.
WHAT ELSE? Well, I've always
wanted to write a shooter game. Just
a couple of weeks ago, I devised a
scheme which should allow as much
stuff on the screen as I want. If the
computer can't handle it, the action
slows down. The way that the slowdown
occurs is what I'm most proud of. If
you have a SuperCPU, you'll never
even SEE the occasional slowdown.
I've got a list of more than 30
games to write, sorted by category.
The hard part is deciding which one
to pursue after Ghoul's Gold is done.
Feel free to request a favorite.
So, go check out the Gallery.
It's just a taste of what's to come
in 2002. I hope you'll decide to come
along for the ride. Renew today.
Thank you.
