To back up, press F7.
For aeons, the Dragon's challenge has
confounded those who try to master
it. Deceptively simple -- simply
match tiles to clear them from the
board -- but fiendishly addictive.
Can you meet his call?
To start the game, press F5 and
select the option to start MG. (To
skip the launcher in future, type
LOAD"GAME",D,1 where D is your device
number.) The title screen and theme
music will play; press any key to
proceed to the main menu.
Use a joystick in port 2 to select
your gameplay options -- use left and
right to switch from menu to menu,
and up and down to choose an option.
Choose classic for original-style
MGSE game play with no timelimit, or
timed for the Dragon's challenge;
then choose your difficulty, either
48, 72 or 96 tiles. Press the button
when you're ready to play.
MGSE will generate your puzzle (if
you have a 128, 2MHz mode will be
invoked to speed generation, so your
screen may blank briefly; SCPU owners
will also benefit from faster puzzle
creation times) and then display the
main gameplay screen.

There are eight rows of tiles on each
half the game board, divided by the
white tiles in the centre. Your job
is to match and clear all the tiles
from the board, from the edges in.
Here are the basic rules:
1. All tiles must match from the ends
of rows. The cursor is "smart": it
will automatically jump over empty
rows and will position itself on the
ends to help prevent you from making
an illegal move. It wraps at the top
and bottom. Pick your first tile,
press the button, and then its match,
and press the button.
2. Gong tiles have a further
restriction. Big Gongs (tiles with
large circles) must be matched on
opposite sides of the game board.
Little Gongs (tiles with small
circles) must be matched on the same
side. Remember, the game board is
divided by the white centre tiles.
In classic mode, you have no score or
timelimit, and you are not penalised
for illegal moves. The FUND and TIME
fields do not appear.
In timed mode, your moves (and
mistakes) are counted to and from a
"FUND" (your score). This fund is
credited based on how fast you make
valid moves, but it will be depleted
if you exceed the timelimit or
misalign Gongs. You have five
seconds, or you will be penalised
half your FUND or 200 points,
whichever is greater. However, should
you misalign Gongs, you will be
penalised half your FUND, or 400
points, whichever is more! All other
illegal moves merely waste time. When
your FUND is depleted, the game is
over.
All puzzles have at least one
solution. However, should you fail to
find one, press F1 to bail out to the
main menu.
If you complete the game by clearing
all tiles from the board, in classic
mode you will hear the three chimes
calling you to the Dragon's challenge
of timed mode. If you complete the
game in timed mode, the Dragon
himself will appear in a flash of
light and sound. Consider yourself
honoured, O Enlightened One!
