FORUM is back, with a rather
general question, and a letter from a
"collector."
------------------------
Dear Dave,
I am thinking about going over to
a PC -- but I don't want to lose my
C-64 or LOADSTAR. Any suggestions?
Bob
Dear Bob,
Three suggestions:
1. Keep the C-64. Whoever said you
can have only one computer. In fact, I
know of people who use their Pentium
Computers as "servers" for their
C-64s. That is, the PC is hooked to
the Internet and the C-64 is hooked to
the PC. Don't ask me how. I don't
know. Yet.
But I plan to find out soon. I want
to use Ethernet to connect my five
machines together so we can share the
DSL line to the Internet. So you all
will certainly be hearing about it.
2. Get VICE (or other emulator). I
use VICE for all my editing of LS.
Composing the issue is very fast with
64Copy on my Pentium's C: Drive. I
have not found one LOADSTAR program
that does not work on VICE.
3. Don't wait until every PC comes
with Microsoft's XP operating system
installed. Windows has its flaws, but
I am leery about program compatibility
with the new system, which does not
have MS-DOS.
The important thing for me is to be
able to run VICE (C-64 emulator),
1581Copy (how I get to and from 1581
disks), and 64Copy (how I build each
issue of LOADSTAR). If not having
MS-DOS means that any of these
programs won't work, then I won't need
XP.
-------------------------
Dave,
Got the latest Loadstar working on
both my P200 and my iMac. (One of
these days I suppose I shall have to
get a 'real' computer, but anyway...)
I REALLY like the way Power64
works on the iMac. One of the major
plusses is that it runs under OS X
(Apple's latest and greatest OS????)
and that made me an instantaneous fan.
It's fast, it's clear and sharply
displayed, and the sound is wonderful.
I have a woofer on the iMac, and it
really makes Dave Marquis sound good
(not that [anything] is required to
make Dave sound good - he [IS] good -
but this setup really brings out his
superb bass lines).
So. I'm a happy camper.
In this room of mine (the
snakepit) there are - count 'em - 14
computers. I'm half computer hobbyist,
half addict, and my mission in life is
to collect, play and enjoy. I'm 57
years old, and keep telling people
that my second childhood doesn't begin
until my first childhood is over.
Don't know when that will be.
[INTERRUPT:] Same here! DMM
I retired from the Canadian
Federal Public Service in 1995. In
terms of my knowledge and experience
of computing, some days I feel like an
outright novice. Other days I'm
actually able to help other people
over whatever computer experience
Murphy and crew have thrown their
way.
I've been on the edges of the
Commodore world, but I've always had a
deep respect for the capabilities of
the C64 and C128, and I'm a solid fan
of LOADSTAR particularly. You have a
way of presenting it that still looks
good even in today's glitzy computing
world.
I'm glad, Dave, that you've taken
on the job of keeping Loadstar going.
There's still a following out there
who appreciate the roots of personal
computing, and who still want to
participate in what is still a highly
satisfying computer experience.
Keep up the good work.
Ron
Ron,
Glad to have you back among the
fold. Thanks for the compliments. We
seem to forget that the CLI (Command
Line Interface) vs GUI (Graphic User's
Interface) was never a Commodore
problem. We have a Command Controlled
Graphic User's Environment. And over
the years, we have kept up our
appearance.
The Best News is that your iMac
with Power64 handles LOADSTAR. I
hoped it would. And your glowing
report of the glowing display makes me
glow with pride -- and want to get an
iMac as my next machine.
-------------------
That's it for this month. Happy
C-64ing!
