NOTE: You must have joysticks plugged
into Ports One and Two to play this
game.
**************************************
Most arcade-style games transport
you to the battlefields of the future
and reward good reflexes rather than
sound strategy. BATTLE 64 is a
different kind of arcader. It takes
you and a competitor to the
battlefields of the past-- back to the
kind of tank battle fought in World
War II. And it requires that you
rely on as much on planning as you do
on your reaction time.
When you plug your joystick into
Port 1, you become a tank commander in
the service of the Blue army. As soon
as your opponent plugs his joystick
into Port 2, he becomes your
counterpart in the Red army.
Your mission objectives are
identical. You must blast through the
mine field that separates the two
armies, destroy your enemy's tank, and
finally, capture his headquarters.
(Headquarters are marked by an "H".)
As you would expect, manuevering and
firing are controlled by the joystick.
You control how far the gun lobs its
shell by controlling the gun's
elevation. To alter the elevation,
move the joystick up or down while
pressing the fire button. (The gun's
current elevation is displayed at the
top of the screen.)
Each tank can sustain nine hits
before it is knocked out. The
battlefield is also mined-- if you
maneuver your tank onto one, it will
cost you a "life." Not all of the
mines are marked.
(NOTE: If you are down to one life,
a small square the color of your army
appears in the barrier that separates
the two tanks. This square represents
a forward repair station. If you can
maneuver your tank over this square,
you will gain an extra life.)
And just as in a real battle, fuel
and ammunition supplies are always
major concerns. To refuel and rearm
you must maneuver your tank to a fuel/
ammo dump. (Either your own or your
enemies dump will replenish your
supplies.) Fuel/ammo dumps are marked
by flags.
(Each tank's fuel/ammo status, the
number of hits it can sustain, and the
player's score are displayed beneath
the battlefield.)
And speaking of scores.... Each
time you hit the enemy tank, you
score 200 points; blowing up its
supply dump is worth 500. Blasting
some of the obstacles will also
net you a modest number of points.
But any tank commander worth his
salt must remember his mission
objective: capturing enemy
headquarters.
For a headquarters to fall, the
enemy's tank must first have less
than two lives left. Then, when you
maneuver your tank over the block
representing headquarters, you win the
battle. If neither of you is able to
secure the other's headquarters, the
game ends in a "tie", with a technical
victory awarded to the player with
the most points.
What happens if you destroy your
enemy's headquarters? You lose 500
points! Remember, your mission is to
capture, not destroy, your enemy's
headquarters. This is a game for
strategists, not Rambos.
(Both headquarters and supply dumps
will eventually be rebuilt if they
are destroyed.)
If you want to freeze the game,
press the SHIFT/P combination. The
battle will resume when you press any
key or press the fire button on the
joystick that is plugged into Port 2.
