This game appears to be another
winner from Bruce Carver, the man who
gave us NEUTRAL ZONE and BEACH-HEAD.
It's a multi-screen dodge'em, shoot-
em-up type arcade game. It's VERY
good.
The basic idea is that both the
US and USSR agreed to a nuclear pact
(SALT IV, according to the overview),
but although the US did get rid of its
nuclear arsenal in favor of setting up
a series of space stations equipped
with STEALTH bombers as a defensive
measure, the USSR did not, and is now
launching missles at various US and
CANADIAN cities, and will detonate
them upon impact--unless you can
destroy the launch complexes before
the missiles impact.
You start out by noting the
missle launch, then you climb aboard
one of the STEALTH bombers and launch
it from the space station down to the
city that sent the missiles.
You have to then negotiate a 3-D
type scrolling screen (like the BEACH
in BEACH-HEAD) with your bomber,
avoiding or blasting items like tanks,
trucks, posts, buildings, enemy guns,
helicopters, bombers, and heat-seeking
missiles. Whew! After you get past
this screen, you have to destroy the
missile complex (at least the command
tower). You then get to start all
over, with a new city to fly through
and a new launch complex to destroy.
After you have destroyed three
missile complexes, you then get to
fly to Moscow, where you must fight
the KGB to gain entrance to the main
building so that you may persuade the
main power reactor to reach critical
mass--thereby destroying the cause
of all the trouble! In these last
two screens, you have only the weapons
you can carry (looks like a bazooka)
for killing off the 8 KGB agents and
their tank in the first Moscow scene
and you get DISC-GRENADES to try to
blast the maintenance robots in the
reactor room--it takes FOUR hits to
blow up each robot, AND they all have
to be hit from the back, by bouncing
the DISCS off the back wall of the
reactor room! There is supposed to be
another screen (maybe two) past this
point, but I have yet to get there
(I've only had the game about a week,
and I suspect that it'll take a couple
of months before I see any screens
past this point!).
I HIGHLY recommend this game!
