  26. This appendix uses NCSA HDF to outline the procedures for 
  27. obtaining NCSA software via FTP, an archive server, or by 
  28. regular mail.

  31. Obtaining NCSA Software
  32.  
  33. FTP
  34. If you are connected to Internet (NSFNET, ARPANET, MILNET, 
  35. etc.) you can download HDF software and documentation at no 
  36. charge from an anonymous file transfer protocol (FTP) server at 
  37. NCSA. The steps you should follow to do so are enumerated below. 
  38. If you have any questions regarding the connection or procedure, 
  39. consult your local system administrator or network expert.
  40.  
  41. 1.    Log on to a host at your site that is connected to Internet and is 
  42. running software supporting the FTP command.
  43.  
  44. 2.    Invoke FTP on most systems by entering the Internet address of 
  45. the server:
  46.  
  47.     %  ftp  ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu
  48.  
  49.     or
  50.  
  51.     %  ftp  128.174.20.50
  52.  
  53. NOTE:  After 2/15/91, the FTP address will change from 
  54. 128.174.20.50 to 141.142.20.50.

  56. 3.    Log in by entering anonymous for the name.
  57.  
  58. 4.    Enter your name for the password.
  59.  
  60. 5.    Enter get README.FIRST to transfer the instructions file 
  61. (ASCII) to your local host.
  62.  
  63. 6.    Enter quit to exit FTP and return to your local host.
  64.  
  65. 7.    Review the README.FIRST file for complete instructions 
  66. concerning the organization of the FTP directories and the 
  67. procedures you should follow to download the README files 
  68. specific to the application you want.

  70. Your login session should resemble the following sample, where 
  71. the remote user's name is smith and user entries are indicated in 
  72. boldface type.

  95. The README.FIRST file instructs you to copy the HDF README 
  96. file to your directory and read it before proceeding. Your FTP 
  97. session should resemble the one listed below:

  113. The HDF README file explains how to copy the contents of the 
  114. HDF directory to your home directory via remote login or 
  115. anonymous FTP. The precise file transfer procedure varies 
  116. according to the type of operating system under which you will use 
  117. HDF╤UNICOS or other.

  120. Archive Server
  121. To obtain NCSA software via an archive server:

  123. 1.    E-mail a request to:

  127. 2.    Include in the subject or message line, the word "help."

  129. 3.    Press RETURN.

  131. 4.    Send another e-mail request to:

  158. software. This controlled-access server will e-mail the 
  159. distribution to you one segment at a time.

  163. HDF software and manuals are available for purchase╤either 
  164. individually or as part of the anonymous FTP reel or cartridge 
  165. tapes╤through the NCSA Technical Resources Catalog. Orders 
  166. can only be processed if accompanied by a check in U.S. dollars
