  1. bitmap    An image composed of binary pixels (black & white)

  3. grayscale
  4.     An image composed of gray levels (using 2 to 8 bits, usually
  5.     8 bits).  May be mapped or unmapped.
  6.  
  7. RGB, 24bit
  8.     An image which contains 3 8bit values of red, green, and
  9.     blue for each pixel.  They are by definition unmapped.
  10.  
  11. mapped image, mapped color image
  12.     A mapped image contains a single plane of values, 1 to 8 bits
  13.     (usually 8, although 4-7 are also found), and a colormap
  14.     which has three vectors of color values for red, green and
  15.     blue.

  18.     Either 8 bit grayscale or 24bit (RGB) color.
