- I believe that someone (I volunteer myself) should maintain a list of
- current releases and the state of all software on ftp.eunet.ch.
-
- For example, I hear of a new kernel (720). This requires a new loadbsd.
- I think it introduces shared libraries, which may require new binaries
- (to take advantage of it). However, when building the kernel, you now need
- to use an older version of ld - the shared library-aware version won't work.
-
- Especially for someone not keeping absolutely current on the list, this
- can be overwhelming.
-
- What I propose is the following: I prepare a document detailing:
- - All additional functionality introduced by each kernel release
- - Requirements/suggestions to run the new kernel (e.g. new loadbsd,
- shared library binaries, new X stuff...)
- - Requirements to compile the new kernels. (I will test-compile before
- I update the list. Remember the problems with /src/lib/libc and
- gcc -traditional?)
-
- This way, anyone can at a glance ensure that s/he has all necessary
- software to upgrade the system, and that said upgrade will make a
- functional difference to the system. For example, I don't have an 040,
- so any upgrade whose only purpose is to provide 040 functionality is of
- no use to me. I can wait for the new kernels.
-
- To achieve these ends (if it is agreed that such a quick-start guide is
- a good thing), I would appreciate it if the people involved with
- building the new kernels would email me (in addition to posting to
- the mailing list) detailing what they did. After I test (or ask
- someone else to test if I don't have the right HW), then I will either
- update the document, or attempt to solve build problems privately.
- The document itself will be posted to this list, comp.unix.amiga, as
- well as on ftp.eunet.ch.
-
- If it is agreed to do this, then I would appreciate confirmation of
- the requirements to run .720. (Loadbsd, ld, etc.)
-
- Comments?
