  5. A few years back, I created a bitmapped font using 
  6. FONTASTIC, originally called Philo, and after some 
  7. alterations, Fancy Chancery. It was unique mainly for its 
  8. removal of dots where  smooth curves would not be 
  9. permitted, thus giving an overall appearance of gray. The 
  10. font actually prints quite cleanly (particularly at 12 
  11. point) on the Imagewriter and was only a 24 pt. bitmap 
  12. initially.

  14. I am pleased to learn that the font has shown up in 
  15. numerous places with several different names and 
  16. variations, from Fluent Fonts of CasadyWare (Casady Greene) 
  17. (with my permission) to bulletin boards here and there. 
  18. Most recently I received from Doug Miles in Washington 
  19. state a newly done bitmap in a heavier weight plus a 
  20. postscript font executed by Marion Delahan in Oklahoma 
  21. based upon the same font.

  23. Coincidentally, I recently started redrawing the original 
  24. Fancy Chancery on Fontographer for Laserwriter. When I 
  25. received the Delahan version I decided on a complete 
  26. redrawing and renaming of the postscript font. The result 
  27. is MacHumaine.

  29. There have been inquiries as to how I intend to distribute 
  30. MacHumaine. I wish it to remain in the public domain to be 
  31. used by anyone who wants to take the time to copy it. 
  32. Additionally, the package contains the original 
  33. Fontographer workfile as well as the AFM file so anyone who 
  34. wishes to alter or improve it, may do so if they have 
  35. Fontographer. The bitmaps are absolutely pure FONTOGRAPHER 
  36. generated with no tweaking. For my own purposes this is 
  37. satisfactory, however if you would like to see them 
  38. cleaner, have at it with Fontastic. I would not be 
  39. extremely happy to learn that MacHumaine is being sold, but 
  40. I am not quite sure how that eventuality would be dealt 
  41. with. Hopefully this Read Me, which accompanies the font, 
  42. will make folks realize they need not buy it as it is 
  43. available without charge. Anyone who wishes to use 
  44. MacHumaine as a screen display in a commercial program or 
  45. in conjunction with a commercial program has my permission 
  46. to do so. Only outright sale of the font is discouraged.

  48. Historically, the font MacHumaine, as its name is intended 
  49. to imply, is based on calligraphic handwriting and is not 
  50. too distant from Zapf Chancery Black. That font, drawn by 
  51. Hermann Zapf, was not the model for MacHumaine, but Zapf 
  52. also used chancery cursive handwriting as a the basis for 
  53. his font. MacHumaine is a sort of pot pourri of 
  54. calligraphic strokes and flourishes that, to my eye, seem 
  55. to be pretty well integrated and, especially when 
  56. italicized on the Mac, gives an appearance of italic 
  57. handwriting. I do hope you enjoy it. Oddly, it prints quite 
  58. well even at small sizes and is quite readable. Please do 
  59. not use it ALL CAPS. Generally calligraphic styles do not 
  60. lend themselves to this treatment and this one is no 
  61. exception. Use key caps to check for a few added 
  62. characters. Any comments or suggestions on the font are 
  63. welcome.
