- MORE THAN A FEELING
- -------------------------------------
-
- Boston has alot of interesting architecture that you
- can see when you walk the FREEDOM TRAIL there.
-
- I was EXPOSED to alot of Boston's architecture via
- a job I had in college. I drove a food delivery truck
- for STAR MARKET. We not only saw the outsides of alot
- of amzing places, we saw the insides, too.
-
- There were alot of excellent old mansions around
- Dartmouth Street and up and down Commonwealth Avenue
- and in Beacon Hill. You would not believe the
- Penthouse views. And some of these places did not
- have elevators. And some that did had ancient
- DC-powered ones that had WARNING notices on the
- outside that said they might STOP a odd times.
-
- There's architecture by H.H. Richardson
- like the Copley Square Church. And works
- done by I.M. Pei. Matter of fact,
- I.M. Pei and his associates have designed several
- major buildings around Boston. They've designed
- the Hancock Building in Copley Square, and the
- West Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts. But the
- one that I like the best is the Kennedy Library
- in Dorchester. It really looks impressive facing
- out to sea.
-
- If you need a good mapbook of Boston,
- here's an popular one:
- UNIVERSAL ATLAS OF METROPOLITAN BOSTON & EASTERN MASS
- 165 Maps, including house buying information.
- (Universal Pubs; Stoughton, MA; 1991)
- I got mine at WORDSWORTH of Harvard Square
- 30 Brattle Street, Cambridge.
-
- And TWO books to help you find & enjoy BOSTON's architecture:
-
- A.I.A. GUIDE TO BOSTON
- by Susan & Michael Southworth
- (Globe Pequot Press; Chester, CT; 1984)
-
- AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE
- a field guide to the most important examples
- by William Dudley Hunt, Jr
- (Harper & Row; New York; 1984)
-
- Boston's Chinatown has architectural delights, too.
- There's the Chinese Gate. And more....
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------------------------------
- CHINA
- -------------------------------------
-
- Here's a recipe for one of China's favorite delicacies:
-
- SHARKS' FIN SOUP
- ----------------
- 12 oz sharks' fin 6 tbsp bamboo shoots
- 1 inch knob of fresh ginger 10 cups hot chicken stock
- 1 clove crushed garlic 2 tbsp Shao Shing or
- COLD water sherry soya sauce
- 1 leg of a chicken 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 cup raw breast of chicken VINEGAR
- 1/4 cup Chinese ham SALT
-
- SOAK the sharks' fins in water for 24 hours.
- BOIL them slowly for 4 hours with ginger & garlic
- in double the amount of water required to cover them.
- DRAIN and remove any flesh on the fins.
- Put it in a basin, place the chicken leg on top,
- and steam slowly for 2 hours.
- REMOVE the chicken leg and any water which may have
- dropped on the fins.
- SHRED chicken breast, ham, and bamboo shoots into fine strips.
- Put sharks' fins into saucepan, pour in enough stock to
- cover and boil for 5 minutes. ADD chicken, ham, bamboo shoots
- and wine, and simmer for another 5 minutes.
- ADD a few drops of soya sauce, sesame oil, vinegar & salt
- to taste and serve.

- And another great place to go is KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE.
-
- There's a Lithuanian Franciscan Monastery up there
- that runs a MOTEL within walking distance of downtown.
- PERFECT location. It's secluded & quiet, too.
- Great place to unwind. They have a special breakfast
- where they serve Lithuanian breads & such.
- And they have a salt-water swimming pool.
- IF you ASK, you can get a sticker for your car that
- will let you park at & use the local BEACHES!
- And there's plenty of stores in Kennebunkport.
- I picked up a copy of a great PIANO INSTRUMENTAL CD
- up there. It's:
-
- TWO HEARTS
- by Peter Kater
- (PDK; 1986; PDK CD-4001)
-
- And Portland, Maine is a short distance away.
- Just NORTH up the coast. There are many artists
- galleries and gift shops there, too. And you can
- catch a boat to HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA from Portland
- And learn about the OAK ISLAND MYSTERY. A place
- where either the FRENCH but more likely the ENGLISH
- buried some gold after the Revolutionary War.
-
- And if you keep heading NORTH up the coast of MAINE
- you'll soon come to Freeport, Maine.
- That's where L.L. Bean is.
- My youngest brother & his wife gave me a
- sweater made in Norway from there.
-
- And don't forget a pack of BICYCLE PLAYING CARDS
- from the U.S.Playing Card Company
- Cincinati, Ohio 45212
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
- -------------------------------------
- MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE
- -------------------------------------
-
- I let a motorcyclist zip in front of me once when I drove
- a delivery truck during college. We only traveled a little
- bit further up to a U-turn on Huntington Ave in Boston
- when a car (that saw me) booted it, but didn't see the
- motorcyclist in front of me. Luckily the guy on the
- motorcycle saw it coming and did some gymnastics to
- vault off his bike as it crashed into a car. He body slammed
- a building but at least not his head. And a cop had to
- bag the car because the driver was about to peel off
- due to panic.
-
- Happens to bicycle riders to. They're riding along and someone
- throws open a car door and WHAM!
-
- This means we need a way to separate the BIKES from the CARS.
- In the 1st case of motorcyclists, the bikers need to wear COLORED
- LEATHERS to separate themselves visually from the
- visual background noise.
-
- As for the 2nd case of bicycles, we'd have to talk to
- an EXPERT in Urban Studies/Planning and put Bicycle paths
- through the city where possible.
-
- There are other areas where there are similar URBAN PLANNING
- problems in BOSTON. Ever ride the GREENLINE TROLLEY past
- Boston University? The trolleys go so slow because they have
- to watch out for cars and pedestrians. This is a WICKED POOR
- design. An inexpensive solution would be to DIG a special trench,
- put the trolley tracks into this, have public access paths going down
- to below ground trolley stops. This would allow the trolleys
- to go FASTER, would SHELTER them from the SNOW, and minimize
- accidents with pedestrians. It would also allow the center
- of Commonwealth Avenue to turn into the French Boulevard with
- the GREEN SWATH up the middle. The other problem there, pedestrians
- and cars would still exist. The cars zip along at 40 miles/hour
- and pedestrians basically step right into their path in a sceond.
- NO time to stop. Very hard to see pedestrians there on dark
- and rainy nights. The PERFECT solution would be to put the CARS
- undergorund there too (briefly). Say from Kenmore Square on
- up to the Boston University Bridge. This is the HIGH PEDESTRIAN
- COUNT area. The beauty of this is that it would also give
- BOSTON UNIVERSITY a quiet GREEN campus. And if we cap off
- Storrow drive (the Boston University portion) their GREEN campus
- would extend to the Charles River and be enjoyed by the public, too.
-
- This same idea could be applied at Northeastern University
- on Huntington Avenue, Boston, where they have a similar
- urban design problem. The GREEN BELT there could run
- from SYMPHONY HALL and the HUNTINGTON AVENUE PLAYHOUSE,
- past the YMCA, past WENTWORTH INSTITUTE,
- on up to the MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS.
-
- Someone who would know what to recommend on all this would be
- PHILLIP L. CLAY whose just been promoted to HEAD of the
- M.I.T. Department of URBAN STUDIES & PLANNING (July 1st).
- There's an article on him on page 3 of the April 29, 1992
- M.I.T. TECH TALK campus newspaper. You can pick this up for
- FREE at the Main entrance Hall to M.I.T. on Mass Ave in
- Cambridge. They also give FREE tours of the campus starting
- at this same location.
-
- A very good writer on Urban Design is LEWIS MUMFORD.
- A good book:
-
- FROM THE GROUND UP
- observations on Contemporary Architecture, Housing,
- Highway Building, and Civic Design.
- by Lewis Mumford
- (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich; New York; 1956)
-

-
- The Nation's 500th bike path is nearing completion.
-
- It's the MINUTEMAN BIKEPATH.
-
- It runs from Cambridge, to Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford, Mass.
- Scheduled for completion in October 3, 1992.
- When completed it will be 11 miles long.
-
- And on CAPE COD there is a bike path called:
- THE CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL
-
- It goes from Dennis out to Eastham.
- You can see the ocean from several points along that
- bike route.
-
- And there are bike paths in Lincoln, Mass that you can ride
- on to get part of the way to WALDEN POND in Concord, Mass.
-
- If you'd like to read about what Walden Pond was like in the
- past, you'll find, in reading the book below, that
- THOREAU lived a short walking distance from Railroad Tracks.

- of WALDEN POND, don't forget to watch out for
- the LARGE Snapping Turtles in there.
-
- You'll run across them if you go out to far
- or down to deep.
-
- If you put a mask on you'll see them.
-
- And, yes, the snapping turtle is Massachusetts'
- most dangerous critter, but if you're
- careful, they won't BITE your finger off.

- DID YOU KNOW THAT?
- -------------------------------------
-
- Did you know that UNCLE SAM was born in Arlington, MA?
- His name was originally Samuel Wilson.
- There's a statue dedicated to him near the center there.
-
- He went from there to MASON, New Hampshire and then
- to Troy, New York. In Troy, New York during the
- WAR of 1812, he worked as an inspector where
- he shipped meat stamped U.S. to the army.
-
- The Uncle Sam poster that says: "I WANT YOU"
- dates from (1917).
-
- The statue is located just down the street from a
- bagel shop named BAGELS BY US. I think the US is
- a bagel business in New York, you'll have to check their sign.
- I think they wanted to say Uncle Sam but a legal business
- person probably had them change the name to avoid confusion.
- And NO there bagels are not stamped U.S.
