  156.             Welcome to 'Family-Tree,Etc', a genealogy system for the IBM
  157.             personal computer user (and also many others, such as the
  158.             COMPAQ, AT&T 6300, IBM-PCjr, etc.)
  159.  
  160.             Collecting data and information about ones family orign is an
  161.             interesting and rewarding pasttime and hobby ... but may, if
  162.             not properly approached, become a jungle of paperwork, losing
  163.             much of the meaning and enjoyment that could have been derived
  164.             from your efforts.  The personal computer is an ideal tool to
  165.             assist you in your search of your family tree ... providing the
  166.             capability to quickly add new information, retrieve and update
  167.             existing records, and the generation of meaningful charts to
  168.             document your research.

  170.             Family-Tree, Etc ... known to your computer as FT-ETC ... is a
  171.             'menu' driven system with single keystroke commands, scrolling,
  172.             mini-windows and screen/printer/diskette report capability.

  174.             The system is currently designed to support a family tree with a
  175.             maximum of 999 persons, consisting of the following data:

  196.             The following files will be created after the creation of the
  197.             Family Tree data base:

  204.             The distribution diskette is your 'master' copy and and should be
  205.             duplicated ... with the duplicate becoming your everyday working
  206.             copy of the system.  The following directions explain how to make
  207.             your duplicate copy:
  208.  
  209.             1. Start your DOS system (Ctrl/Alt/Del)
  210.  
  211.             2. Following your DOS system commands as when to swap/change
  212.                diskettes, FORMAT a new diskette with the following command:
  213.  
  214.                                A>format b:/s
  215.  
  216.             3. Place a write-protect tab on the distribution diskette, and
  217.                then COPY the FT-ETC programs and files to the newly formatted
  218.                diskette:
  219.  
  220.                                A>copy FT-ETC*.* b:

  222.             4. Optional - To provide more work space on your new diskette,
  223.                you may want to delete (ERASE) the documentation file from
  224.                the newly created diskette with the command:
  225.  
  226.                                A>erase FT-ETC.TXT

  228.             5. Optional - You may at some point in time wish to remove the
  229.                Famity-Tree Data Bases from the diskette (drastic!) and re-
  230.                start from ground zero by creating a new data base using the
  231.                MAINTENANCE Option.  The following command will ERASE the
  232.                data bases from the diskette:

  240.             To start the 'Family-Tree, Etc' system, you should be in DOS mode
  241.             (not BASIC or BASICA) and have the DOS prompt character '>' on
  242.             the screen ... key FT-ETC ... which is the name of the main pro-
  243.             gram on your diskette.

  247.             After keying the above command, press 'Enter'.  DOS will load
  248.             the FT-ETC program, and shortly the Pine Cone Software logo

  262.             The highlighted menu convention/technique is used throughout the
  263.             entire system and operates in the following manner:
  264.  
  265.               . The items within the menu are shown in UPPER-CASE letters,
  266.                 with the current item being shown highlighted (bright)
  267.  
  268.               . The line below the item is a brief description of the high-
  269.                 lighted item
  270.  
  271.               . Any item may be highlighted by use of the 'cursor movement'
  272.                 keys (up/down/left/right arrow keys) to the right of the
  273.                 keyboard ... right/left arrows move the highlight ... and
  274.                 the corresponding item description is displayed
  275.  
  276.               . To select a item from the menu, either
  277.                   .. Highlight the desired item and press [Enter]
  278.                   .. Key the 1st character of the item name (Single key-
  279.                      stroke, [Enter] not required

  284.             EXERCISE:  With CHART being the current highlighted item, select
  285.             INFO by either pressing the right/left arrows or keying the
  286.             letter [i].  You have how highlighted INFO with a description of
  287.             'General Information'.  Press [Enter] if you used the arrow keys.
  288.  
  289.             The 'General Information' explains the concept of 'User-Supported
  290.             Software' and requests that you register with Pine Cone Software
  291.             if you continue to use the system.  At the bottom of the screen,
  292.             notice the message
  293.  
  294.                               Press [Esc] to Continue ...
  295.  
  296.             Pressing the [Esc] key, located on the top row of keys, will re-
  297.             turn you to the menu for another selection.

  314.             Selecting CHARTS from the main menu loads the chart program from
  315.             diskette and displays the chart options in menu format.  Using
  316.             the left/right arrow keys shows the following capabilities of
  317.             the Chart sub-system:

  319.             CHARTS ....... Genealogy - Pedigree, Ancestors, Descendants, ...
  320.               PEDIGREE ..... Standard Pedigree Chart
  321.               DESCENDANTS .. Indented Free-Form Descendants Chart
  322.               ANCESTORS .... Indented Free-Form Ancestors Chart
  323.               FAMILY ....... Family Group Charts
  324.               RELATIONS .... Family Relationships
  325.               SCAN ......... Partial Name Scan/Search
  326.               OPTIONS ...... Specify Global Output Options

  329.             The last two items on the menu (OPTIONS, QUIT) are not true
  330.             charts, put provide the capability to route reports to your
  331.             printer and/or diskette (OPTIONS) and a means of return to
  332.             the previous menu (QUIT).  (Another way of returning to the
  333.             previous menu is the [Esc] key.)

  335.             Based upon the type of Chart that you selected, a menu will
  336.             appear to prompt you for parameters required and options
  337.             available in chart generation.

  361.             lighting SELECT, a prompt message will replace the menu and
  362.             you would key the name of the desired individual ... probably
  363.             only as a particial character string ... and Charts will create
  364.             a 'window' with basic information about the persons found with
  365.             the specified character string within their name.  To scroll to
  366.             the next name, use the up/down arrow keys.  After the desired
  367.             individual is found, press the [Space Bar] to select, and the
  368.             menu will reappear.  Notice the Instructions on the lower line
  369.             of the screen for the special key uses.

  371.           . RUN - Instructs the system to generate the requested chart.
  372.  
  373.           . GENERATIONS - Used optionally to control how many generations
  374.             will be used in the chart.  The default value is 4.

  376.           . DATES - Instructs the system to either do/do-not print birth/
  377.             death date information with the chart.  After selecting the
  378.             YES/NO (or [Esc]) the menu returns.

  380.           . IDs - Instructs the system to either do/do-not print the internal

  548.           . DISKETTE - The sub-menu provides the capability of capturing
  549.             output charts and/or reports in a diskette file (FT-ETC.RPT).
  550.             Using this facility permits the maximum data to be captured.
  551.               .. OPEN - Begin writing reports to diskette
  552.               .. CLOSE - Stop writing reports to diskette
  553.               .. PRINT - Print the report diskette file.  The output
  554.                  will be printed in a 'cut-&-paste' format ... with
  555.                  columns 1-80 being printed on the 1st page, 79-158 on
  556.                  the 2nd, and 157-236 on the 3rd.  The column overlap
  557.                  between pages allow for alignment when pasting the
  558.                  pages together.
  559.               .. ERASE - Will 'reset' the diskette file to the beginning.

  578.             Selecting MAINTENANCE from the main menu loads the maintenance

  580.             menu format.  Using the left/right arrow keys shows the following
  581.             capabilities of the Maintenance sub-system:

  651.             [Enter] is pressed with a 'blank' name, the ADD menu will reappear.

  774.             Selecting REORG from the main menu loads and runs the data base
  775.             reorganization program from diskette.  After selecting REORG,
  776.             there are no user parameters or information required.  REORG
  777.             should be run after MAINTENANCE that has resulted in the ADD,
  778.             CHANGE, or DELETE of Individuals or relationships, and prior to
  779.             the use of CHARTS.  (Multiple MAINTENCE sessions may be run with-
  780.             out a REORG, however after the last Maintenance session,  REORG
  781.             should be run to assure properly structured Charts.)
