  29. A TRAVELLER'S GUIDE  TO PYROTO MOUNTAIN

  34. Welcome to beautiful  Pyroto  Mountain!
  35. Some people come to admire the  awesome
  36. sight of the  fire-rings  that  protect
  37. the  Staging-Schools  on the  mountain-
  38. side.   Some (like me) come looking for
  39. work.  But others come for quite a dif-
  40. ferent reason.
  41.  
  42. These people seek to be students of the
  43. secrets of  TSOTL (The  Spirit  Of  The
  44. Land).  And though they realize that an
  45. arduous task lies ahead, they make that
  46. super-human effort,  hoping always that
  47. they will be the  first  to harness the
  48. incredible magical potency of  TSOTL.
  49.  
  50. TSOTL, of course, is somewhat amused by
  51. these strivings.   But he tolerates the
  52. folly of  humanity,  for reasons of his
  53. own.  Perhaps, in his majesty, he seeks
  54. diversion by  observing  the effects of
  55. Free Will.  Who can say?  Nevertheless,
  56. he allows this struggle to continue.
  57.  
  58. If you, too, seek to climb the Mountain
  59. and  learn  the  secrets  taught at the
  60. Staging-Schools, you will have to learn
  61. to cope with the following things:
  62.  
  63. (1)  TSOTL's patience
  64. (2)  The Guardians of the Schools
  65. (3)  Manna-point level
  66. (4)  Sorcery level
  67. (5)  OTHER wizards!
  68.  
  69. Let me explain further ...
  70.  
  71. TSOTL is  patient,  but he will not put
  72. up with the slow-to-learn, or those who
  73. squander their magical energy.
  74.  
  75. Furthermore, the Guardians will not ac-
  76. cept you  into their Staging-Schools if
  77. you  can not  answer  their  questions.
  78. They wish to ensure that only the  most
  79. intelligent  benefit  from the  ancient
  80. teachings of their Schools.
  81.  
  82. You must also keep track of your Manna-
  83. point level.   Manna is the  source  of
  84. Magickal Energy, granted to the wizards
  85. by the grace of TSOTL.   But if you run
  86. out of  Manna,  you will not be able to
  87. cast your spells.
  88.  
  89. The goal of all this is to improve your
  90. Sorcery Level.   The higher you go, the
  91. more Manna-points you can control,  and
  92. the more spells you can use.
  93.  
  94. But there are  obstacles  in your path.
  95. You will be battling against the  other
  96. wizards,  who are  ALSO  attempting  to
  97. reach high  Sorcery Levels.   They will
  98. use their powers and their wiles in any
  99. way they can.   You must be both clever
  100. and diplomatic,  as you plan  your rise
  101. to power.
  102.  
  103. Your chief resource is your mind.   You
  104. will need to use your  intelligence and
  105. wit to  stay  in the fight.   You can't
  106. bribe TSOTL; he has no need for gold.
  107.  
  108. Of course, you CAN bribe me!  As Scribe
  109. of the  Tidings Scrolls,  I'm in a good
  110. position to ask TSOTL to grant you some
  111. extra Manna-points.   If you need some,
  112. my rate is 2 pennies per point.   Write

  121. tells me that the  maximum  Manna level
  122. of a wizard is:

  126. Bear that in mind,  because I won't re-
  127. fund the difference.
