  6. ----------
  7. Improvements in WinZip 9.0 concentrate on its core functionality:
  8. compression, capacity, and a new, advanced data encryption
  9. capability.  Using WinZip 9.0, you can compress more data,
  10. compress it better, and protect your sensitive documents with far
  11. greater security.

  16. Advanced encryption
  17. -------------------
  18. WinZip 9.0 supports 128- and 256-bit key AES encryption, which
  19. provide much greater cryptographic security than the traditional
  20. Zip 2.0 encryption method used in earlier versions of WinZip.

  23. WinZip 9.0's advanced encryption (FIPS-197 certified) uses the
  24. Rijndael cryptographic algorithm which, in 2001, was specified by
  25. the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in
  26. Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Publication 197
  27. as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

  29. After a three-year competition, the AES was announced by NIST as
  30. an approved encryption technique for use by the U.S. government,
  31. private businesses, and individuals.  When properly implemented
  32. as a key component of an overall security protocol, the AES
  33. permits a very high degree of cryptographic security, yet is fast
  34. and efficient in operation.

  36. WinZip's AES encryption is just as easy to use as traditional Zip
  37. 2.0 encryption:  all you have to do is select the encryption
  38. strength and specify your password.
  39.  
  40. Note:  recipients to whom you send AES-encrypted Zip files must
  41. have a compatible Zip file utility in order to decrypt the files.
  42. We have published the full specification for creating
  43. WinZip-compatible AES-encrypted Zip files, and we expect that
  44. other Zip file utility vendors will provide support for the
  45. format.

  48. Greater capacity
  49. ----------------
  50. In addition to supporting the original Zip file format, WinZip
  51. 9.0 also supports the 64-bit extensions to the Zip file format.
  52. The extended format lets you store all the data you need in Zip
  53. files of virtually unlimited size.

  55. The original Zip file format limited the number of member files
  56. in a Zip file to 65,535, and the maximum size of both the Zip
  57. file itself and any member file to 4 gigabytes.  For all
  58. practical purposes, the 64-bit extended format eliminates all
  59. these restrictions.  Using the extended format, the member file
  60. size, Zip file size, and number of member files you can add to a
  61. Zip file are limited only by your system's resources.

  63. WinZip remains fully compatible with the older file format and
  64. uses the original format whenever possible.  WinZip uses the
  65. 64-bit extended format only when the limits of the original
  66. format are exceeded.

  69. Improved compression
  70. --------------------
  71. WinZip 9.0 supports the "enhanced deflate" compression method.
  72. This compression method provides greater compression and reduces
  73. the size of your Zip files, saving you data transmission time and
  74. valuable disk space.

  76. Note: versions of WinZip prior to WinZip 8.1 will not be able to
  77. extract files compressed with this new method.

  80. Other Changes in WinZip 9.0
  81. ---------------------------
  82. - In addition to the new AES encryption technology, WinZip 9.0
  83.   provides a number of usability enhancements that make it easier
  84.   for you to use encryption.  For example, you can now easily
  85.   encrypt the files that are already in a Zip file; previously,
  86.   files could be encrypted only while they were being added to
  87.   the Zip file.

  89. - WinZip 9.0 makes it easier than ever for you to find the WinZip
  90.   information you need by presenting help information using the
  91.   newer Microsoft "HTML Help" facility.  HTML help has a more
  92.   attractive appearance and includes many usability improvements.

  94. - WinZip 9.0 gives you easier access to your most important file
  95.   locations in many WinZip Classic dialogs.  Key dialogs such as
  96.   New Archive, Open Archive, Add, and Extract contain "places
  97.   bars" when running under Windows versions that support them.
  98.   The places bar provides quick access to your top-level
  99.   locations, usually My Computer, My Network (or Network Places),
  100.   My Documents, Recent Documents (or History), and the Desktop.

  102. - WinZip 9.0 lets you quickly find out what is in your Zip files.
  103.   In My Computer and Windows Explorer, the tooltip that is
  104.   displayed when you position the mouse pointer over a Zip file
  105.   now contains information about the contents of your archives by
  106.   listing up to 25 of the files and folders in the archive.

  108. - When installed under Windows XP, WinZip 9.0 installs and
  109.   registers for all users.  This change makes it easier to
  110.   install WinZip in business or home environments where more than
  111.   one person uses a computer.
  112.  
  113. - WinZip 9.0 contains a number of changes to improve performance
  114.   and efficiency:
  115.  
  116.    - The "Use for removable media only" option for the working
  117.      folder (in the Folders tab of the Configuration dialog) is
  118.      now set by default.  This results in faster Zip file
  119.      creation in most cases.
  120.  
  121.    - By default, WinZip no longer automatically displays comments
  122.      when opening Zip files that contain comments.

  124.    - In Windows XP network environments, the performance of
  125.      WinZip's Windows Explorer extensions has been improved.
  126.  
  127.    - Several changes have been made to improve performance when
  128.      extracting files from archives.

  130. - WinZip 9.0's Classic interface has been improved:

  132.    - The Extract dialog has been redesigned to display more
  133.      folders in the folder tree view and to provide more space
  134.      for typing folder names.
  135.  
  136.    - Placing the mouse pointer over a truncated file name (one
  137.      that won't fit in the available space) displays a tooltip
  138.      showing the complete file name.

  140.    - Because it is an action rather than a setting, the option to
  141.      "Restore all caution messages" in the Miscellaneous tab of
  142.      the Configuration dialog has been changed from a checkbox
  143.      to a pushbutton.
  144.  
  145.    - The main WinZip window now contains a watermark when used
  146.      under Windows XP with an XP-style theme.
  147.  
  148. - WinZip 9.0 no longer triggers false warnings in certain
  149.   security tools that search for programs that use the "zlib"
  150.   compression library. zlib is not a WinZip component.
