The easiest method of installing FIFA 99 is to use the "Autorun" feature in Windows 95/98. Insert the FIFA 99 CD into your CD-ROM drive. After you select the language you wish to install, the game will bring you to the FIFA 99 Install Screen.
b) Minimum Hard drive space required
It is important to note that you must have a minimum of 20 MB hard drive space free to run the game. (additional space is required for Save games and DirectX 6.0 installation.)
c) If your "Autorun" feature is disabled
If for some reason your "Autorun" feature is disabled (it may have been disabled by another program, or the "Auto insert notification" may be disabled on your CD), you can install the program by running AUTORUN.EXE directly from the root directory of the CD.
2. New options on Install screen after install
After you've successfully installed the game in Windows 95/98, you may notice that some of the buttons that were visible on the Install screen (the "Install" button, for example) are no longer visible, while others (the "Play" button) are now available. This simply reflects the new options that are available. Press the "Re-Install" button if you would like to re-install the game (you may have accidentally deleted some files, or possibly changed your mind about installing the play-by-play files). It will prompt you to uninstall the game and then proceed with re-installing it.
See section 4 for details on un-installing.
3. Direct X
a. Installing DirectX directly from CD (if you skipped it during game install)
FIFA 99 comes with DirectX 6.0 and will prompt you to install it during installation. If you would like to install it manually, make sure the FIFA 99 CD is in the CD-ROM drive change to the following folder on your CD-ROM drive:
"\Directx6\DirectX"
and double-click on DXSETUP.EXE
b. DirectX 6.0 and supported hardware
We recommend that FIFA 99 be run with DirectX compatible sound boards and video cards. While there is a good chance that FIFA 99 will run with non-DirectX compatible hardware, you may find that:
i) Sound quality suffers
ii) The game runs slightly slower.
iii) The game does not run at all.
If your sound board or video card do not support DirectX, please contact your vendor.
4. Uninstalling FIFA 99
The simplest method of uninstalling FIFA 99 is to use the Uninstall button on the FIFA 99 Install screen. (this is the Autorun screen that pops up when you insert the FIFA 99 CD into the CD-ROM drive)
You may also use the Uninstall shortcut in the Start Menu. This can be found with the game icon on the Start Menu. (usually "Start Menu/Programs/EA Sports/FIFA 99")
Windows 95/98 also has an "Add/Remove Programs" Icon in the Control Panel that you can use to uninstall the game.
5. Memory requirements
a. Memory requirements in Windows 95/98
The Windows 95/98 version of FIFA 99 requires a minimum of 16MB of RAM to run. If there is more memory available, you should experience better game performance in all areas.
b. Running the game under stressful Windows 95/98 conditions
At Electronic Arts we strive to bring you the best in graphics, audio and gameplay. We are always pushing the envelope of computer performance.
While we have made every effort to ensure that FIFA 99 multi-tasks with all Windows 95/98 applications, we recommend that you shut down other applications and run FIFA 99 by itself when possible.
6. Improving game speed (frame-rates, etc.)
One way to speed up the overall FIFA 99 experience is to choose a larger install - the more data that is on your hard drive, the less time that your PC needs to access your CD.
We've also implemented a few ways to speed up the game-play.
- (the minus key) - reduces the size of the screen
y - toggles field detail
t - toggles stadium detail
Please note that these hotkeys are disabled when running the game with 3Dfx, PowerVR or D3D support.
Disabling the radar, speech or sound effects may also improve the frame-rate.
See "Hot Keys" section below for more details.
7. Hot Keys
We've implemented various hot-keys to access certain functions more quickly.
In the Front End (before you get to the game):

8. Network
Running the game on an IPX network with routers
In order for the game to function across a router, IPX networks with routers must be configured to route SAP. Also, the machine operating as the game server must not be running any other software which is an SAP service (TSRs under DOS, some file sharing, print sharing, or other servers under Windows 95/98).
Once again, we recommend that you contact your network administrator if you are experiencing problems.
9. Modem
a) Dial and Wait for call
ESC can always abort the connection attempt. The game will also time-out after 5 minutes.
b) Call Waiting
We recommend that call waiting be disabled as we have experience some problems with it during modem games. Specifically, call waiting can disrupt modem games already in progress.
10. Keyboard, joystick and mouse functionality
You must use the mouse to navigate the game interface. Click on buttons and icons to select modes and options. The keyboard is available to enter information or send chat messages when playing other users via modem or network.
Joysticks/gamepads will not operate until you are in a game, except in the controller select screen. When you are on this screen you must move whichever input device you plan to use ingame to the left or the right to select your team. The game will automatically detect the type of device it is and a graphic will display depicting it.
Please note that you may have to recalibrate your controllers with each new install in order to have the game detect them correctly.
We highly recommend the use of a good 10-button gamepad for ingame play.
To bring up the ingame pause menus, you can press the Start button (if your gamepad has one) or press ESC and
