TOGLKEY PROGRAMS
The "TOGLKEY" programs are a collection of eight programs
designed to control the status of the toggle keys. By
employing these programs in batch files, the user can control the
keyboard status of the INSERT, CAPSLOCK, NUMLOCK and SCROLLOCK
keys.
Any reference to the "TOGLKEY" programs found in these instruc-
tions refers to the following eight programs:
CAPSOFF.COM
CAPSON.COM
INSRTOFF.COM
INSRTON.COM
NUMLKOFF.COM
NUMLKON.COM
SCROLLON.COM
SCROLOFF.COM
As you can see, there are two programs for each toggle key. One
turns the key on and the other turns the key off.
TOGLKEY PROGRAMS ARE FOR IBM PC'S AND COMPATIBLES
The "TOGLKEY" programs are designed to run on IBM PC's and
compatibles. These programs have been tested on systems running
MS or PC DOS versions 3.2 or later. They have been tested on
on systems running Microsoft Windows version 3.0 or later, where
they were run in a DOS window, as a DOS or Non-Windows program.
WHAT CAN THE TOGLKEY PROGRAMS DO FOR ME!!!
The eight programs which make up the "TOGLKEY" collection were
designed to be called from batch files in order fix the status
of the toggle keys, INSERT, CAPSLOCK, NUMLOCK and SCROLLOCK,
before activating an applications program like Lotus, D-Base,
Advanced Revelation or Microsoft Word. Often it is important to
insure that the toggle keys are in a predetermined state before
entering an application program.
I originally wrote these programs for use with novice PC users,
becuase they continually encountered errors caused by varying
the status of the toggle keys upon entering an application.
For example, one data base program virtually requires that the
CAPSLOCK key be in the "ON" position when you enter the program.
TOGGLE KEY Programs - Instructions And Registration Page 2
I will never forget the secretary who constantly bugged me with
complaints that her data base application occasionally mal-
functioned for no apparent reason. After driving some one
hundred and fifty miles to her remote West Texas field office,
I determined that the secretary sometimes entered the data base
program with the CAPSLOCK key on, and sometimes with the CAPS-
LOCK key off. In any case, she wasn't checking the status of the
CAPSLOCK key before entering the application. When she entered
data with CAPSLOCK key off, the application malfunctioned and
she received numerous error messages.
Needless to say, when I completed the three hundred mile round
trip back to my office, I decided to write the the "TOGLKEY"
programs. With novice computer users, it is ESSENTIAL to control
the status of the toggle keys before entering an application.
Later, I found this same golden rule holds true for students,
habitually klutzy typists, and power users who are just too
busy (or lazy) to check the status of their toggle keys before
entering an application. All of these groups of computers users
can benefit from entering their favorite application programs
with a consistant and predetermined toggle key setup.
Recently, I noticed one other rather esoteric group of programs
which seem to benefit from a preset toggle key status. These
are process control applications where the risk of application
failure or operator error must be held to an absolute minimum.
In other words, there is so much riding on the applications in
terms of dollars invested, that you simply can't leave anything
to chance. In these situations, the "TOGLKEY" programs are in-
valuable, because they eliminate one more possible cause of
failure.
RUNNING THE TOGLKEY PROGRAMS
Just type the name of the program and press enter. Nothing could
be simpler:
CAPSON <ENTER>
Naturally, this turns the CAPSLOCK key to the "ON" position.
If you want to test it, type the command in the above example and
watch the CAPSLOCK status light on your keyboard.
Likewise, if you want to turn the CAPSLOCK key to the "OFF" posi-
tion, enter the following command:
CAPSOFF <ENTER>
All the other six programs are used to control toggle keys in the
same "ON" - "OFF" sequence.

DIRECTORY PATH
In order to execute in one of the eight "TOGLKEY" programs,
DOS must be able to find home directory where the program
resides. This means you must do one of three things:
1. The directory in which the "TOGLKEY" program resides,
must be in the DOS path, which is usually set in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file when the system boots. OR....
2. You must make the directory in which the "TOGLKEY"
program resides, the current directory BEFORE issuing
the program command. OR...
3. You must precede the program command with a path
directive:
EXAMPLE: C:\UTILS\CAPSON <ENTER>
Note, in the example above the "CAPSON" command is
preceded by a path directive. In other words, the file
"CAPSON.COM" resides in the "C:\UTILS" directory,
according to the example above.
Note also that while the "CAPSON" program was used in the above
examples, the parameters discussed would of course apply equally
to any of the eight "TOGLKEY" programs, CAPSON, CAPSOFF,
INSRTON, INSRTOFF, NUMLOKON, NUMLOKOFF, SCROLLON and SCROLLOFF.
RUNNING TOGLKEY PROGRAMS FROM A BATCH FILE
To my way of thinking this the best way to use the "TOGLKEY" pro-
grams. Just make sure that DOS can find the "TOGLKEY" program as
part of the system path. Otherwise, preface the "TOGLKEY" program
with a path specification as outlined in the previous section on
"DIRECTORY PATH". By running any of the eight "TOGLKEY" programs
from a batch file, the toggle key setup is completely automated
and beyond the control of the end user.

REGISTRATION
If you like the "TOGLKEY" programs, please send me $5. A reg-
istration form for this purpose is found on the last page of
these instructions, and included as part of this "TOGLKEY.DOC"
file. When you pay the registration fee of $5, you will become a
fully registered user.
In the first place, registration is quite simply, "the right
thing to do". Shareware will last only as long as the user pays
his fare share. When you send in the registration form I'll be
able to keep you appraised of future upgrades and enhancements.
For a source code registration fee of $25.00, the assembler
source code will be provided to you. The "TOGLKEY" programs were
assembled using the Microsoft Macro Assembler, version 6.0.
With the source code registration, I will include a new copy of
of the "TOGLKEY" programs on a disk, sized to your specifications
and screened for viruses.
LIABILITY (LEGAL STUFF)
The developer of this software will not accept responsibility
for, and is not liable for, any damage to hardware or software
resulting from the use or operation of the "TOGLKEY" programs.
These programs, instruction manual, and reference material are
sold "as is", without warranty as to their performance, merchan-
tability or fitness for any particular purpose. The entire risk
as to the results and performance of these programs is assumed by
you, the end user.
Personally, I fail to see how a program which turns the caps lock
key on and off could destroy your hardware, but the lawyer was
adamant about the disclaimer.

GOOD LUCK -- HOPE IT HELPS!
If you use these programs and don't send in a registration fee,
well, I know this Old Apache Medicine Man.....
If you like the "TOGLKEY" programs please send in the $5 regis-
tration as outlined on the next page, then ....
May all your oil wells be gushers!
In the end, I hope these programs will save you time and make
your work easier. Any comments and suggestions for improvements
are most welcome. Please send them to:
