  1. Here is a list of "Bill Gates' Top Ten Tricks for
  2. Windows 3.1:"

  4. 10) <Shift>+File-Exit (Hold shift, choose the File, Exit menu options)
  5.     This will save your settings without having to exit Windows.
  6.  9) Load PROGMAN.EXE in the Startup Group, and assign it a Short-cut key
  7.     (in a PIF). This will allow you, in the middle of a windows
  8.     application, to hit the short-cut key and either bring up the
  9.     program manager, or to hit another short-cut and bring up another
  10.     windows (or DOS) application that has a short-cut assigned to it.
  11.  8) Drag a file from the file-manager into an open group in the
  12.     program-manager. This will create an icon for that file, based on
  13.     the windows-app that created it. You can then double-click that
  14.     icon, and bring up the app with the file ...
  15.  7) <Alt>-Double-mouse-click on an Icon, to bring up the 'File,
  16.     Properties' menu option.
  17.  6) <Alt>-Double-mouse-click inside an open group in the program-manager
  18.     to bring up the 'File, New' menu option.
  19.  5) <Alt><Esc> will make all 'background' icons appear.
  20.  4) Select "Allow Close When Active" in a PIF to close a DOS Window with
  21.     a double-mouse-click. (Windows will ask about exiting, and so on
  22.     ...)
  23.  3) Hold <Shift> when loading Windows to avoid anything in the startup
  24.     group. (This does not affect LOAD= and RUN= in the WIN.INI file.)
  25.  2) ^<Shift> when dragging a file from the file manager to an OLE Client
  26.     to get a linked packaged object. I.e., with the file manager open,
  27.     and, say, a WRITE document open, drag a .TXT file with ^<SHIFT> held
  28.     down at the same time, into the WRITE document (from File Man). You
  29.     will get a 'Notepad' icon, with the name of the .TXT file. If you
  30.     double-click the icon, the notepad will be brought up, with the file
  31.     open. Tricky, eh?
  32.  1) Package the calculator inside WRITE (or any other OLE capable
  33.     Application) to create a tool-bar effect. I.e., if you use the OLE
  34.     Package (in the Accessories group) to package the calculator inside
  35.     WRITE (as an example), you will see an icon for the calculator at
  36.     the top of the document. If you double-click it, it will be brought
  37.     up on screen.
