  13. This READ.ME file contains general comments on WWIV v4.23.  If you have
  14. a question/problem not addressed in the other documentation, read through
  15. this file for more information (even if you have already read it).
  16.

  19. The documentation is all new for v4.23.  It uses a "reader" format which
  20. consists of an executable file.  The WWIV documentation will also be
  21. available on SDS sites and Support Boards for downloading as WWA1-423.ZIP,
  22. (The printable documentation for sysops and users).

  24. You are encouraged to look through the documentation as new information
  25. is scattered throughout the doc; however, you are especially encouraged
  26. to look at the chapter on the source code which contains information about
  27. the 4.23 defines that have been added to VARS.H and at the chapter dealing
  28. with Fast Setup Information as it will have details necessary for your
  29. setup of the multi-instance software.

  50. "XLD658", then you have a copy of WWIV that has been tampered with.
  51. There have been cases of people trying to distribute "hacked" copies of
  52. WWIV that have back doors, trojan horses or other un-nice things.  So,
  53. unless you get the above message when unzipping WWIV, you should >NOT<
  54. use the files in the .ZIP file.

  60. REGISTRATION INFORMATION AND DISK ORDERING:

  70. Once your registration has been received and processed, you will be issued a
  71. WWIV registration number.  You should enter this registration number in the
  72. INIT program, section one.  Also, write down the number and keep it in a safe
  73. place for reference.

  75. The $80 registration must be in U.S. currency (check or money order only),
  76. payable to "WWIV Software Services".  >NO< purchase orders, COD's or
  77. credit cards will be accepted.  Persons not located in the USA should use
  78. International Postal Money Orders or checks payable on banks located in
  79. the USA.   Please do not send cash.  Send your registration payment and
  80. information to:

  86. You may use the registration form included in the file 'REGISTER.FRM'.
  87. If your check is not honored by your bank, there is a $15 service charge.

  89. Unlike most BBS's, the source code to WWIV is available to registered
  90. users.  WWIV is written in Turbo C (TC++ or later), and is about 35,000
  91. lines long.  The source code is available >ONLY< to registered WWIV
  92. users.
  93.  
  94. Modified versions of WWIV may NOT be distributed.  The source code to the
  95. INIT.EXE program is not available.
  96.  
  97. The source code is available to registered users ONLY, and may ONLY be
  98. distributed on AUTHORIZED WWIV Source Distribution Sites.  Registering
  99. WWIV will get you a WWIV registration number, plus access to download
  100. the WWIV source code from one or more AUTHORIZED WWIV Source
  101. Distribution Sites, if you have accounts on any, AND you include your
  102. account info on that system in your registration letter.
  103.  
  104. Registration of WWIV means that all files will be mailed to you via
  105. the postal service.  Versions released after you have registered may be
  106. obtained from WWIV Software Services at the cost of $5.00 per disk.  All
  107. disks are sent first class mail, and are usually mailed on Mondays.

  109. In a letter accompanying your registration, be sure to include:
  110.  
  111. 1. The address where you would like any correspondence (or diskettes)
  112.    mailed.
  113.  
  114. 2. Exactly what you expect (i.e. "I wish to register WWIV ($80).  Please mail
  115.    me a copy of the source code on a 360k floppy diskettes."   Or, "I wish
  116.    the source code to the latest (or the next) version mailed to me on 1.44
  117.    diskette(s) and have enclosed $5.".  Please be sure to indicate whether
  118.    you want the source code or a compiled copy.  If you have an account on
  119.    The Dragon's Den, please indicate your user number.  If you have an
  120.    account on a WWIV Source Distribution Site BBS (including Amber),
  121.    please also list the name(s) of the BBS and your user number(s).

  161. be obtained via anonymous FTP on Internet from ftp.wwiv.com.  A WWW page

  166. INSTALLMENT PAYMENT PLAN:
  167.  
  168. WWIVnet and some other WWIV-based Networks require WWIV to be
  169. registerd in order for the node to remain on the network beyond a
  170. 60-day trial period.  Recognizing that some of our younger sysops
  171. may not be able to afford the registration all at once.  The
  172. installment payment plan described in the next paragraph is
  173. offered.  Each payment received under this plan is NON-REFUNDABLE.
  174. Each payment extends the trial period for an additional 60-days
  175. until the entire amount has been received.  Access to Source Code
  176. and the assignment of a registration number occurs ONLY after all
  177. payments have been made.  If you wish to follow this plan, indicate
  178. that in the letter that you send or on the registration form.
  179.  
  180. The installment payment plan involves 3 payments of $20 each and a
  181. final payment of $25 UNLESS you live in a non-North American country
  182. in which cases the third and fourth payments are $25 each.

  184.      Payment 2   $20, due no later than 60 days after the first
  185.                       payment
  186.      Payment 3   $20  or $25, due no later than 60 days after 
  187.                       the second payment.

  191. SETTING UP THE BBS:
  192.  
  193. Before setting up WWIV v4, you should read through all the documentation.
  194. If, after you have read through the documentation there are some items you
  195. don't understand, don't worry about it.  Just go ahead and set up the BBS
  196. anyway.  Most likely, along the way, you will be able to figure it out.
  197.  
  198. Setup and initialization instructions are described in the documentation.
  199. Usually enough information is contained in the chapter on FAST SETUPS for
  200. you to get your BBS initialized and running.
  201.  
  202. If you experience problems with your modem (i.e. not hanging up on users,
  203. not accepting/answering calls correctly), re-read the chapter on modems
  204. in the documentation.  That chapter explains modem setups and configuration
  205. files, and how to make adjustments to them. After you have your system
  206. running, review the documentation again for information on sysop functions
  207. to optimally operate your BBS.
  208.  
  209. If after playing around with the BBS and reading through the documentation
  210. (again) for any clue to a problem that may still exist, try asking another
  211. sysop you might know for help.  If the problem is still not solved, you can
  212. contact a WWIV Support BBS sysop for help.  There are a number of support
  213. systems located throughout the United States.  The file, SUPPORT.LST, lists
  214. the current support bulletin boards.  Sysops of these systems can help you
  215. solve many of the problems you may encounter.  They can also acquaint you
  216. with WWIVnet, a network of WWIV bulletin boards which exchange email and
  217. messages across the the United States and several foreign countries.
  218.  
  219. Whether you contact a WWIV support sysop or the author, Wayne Bell,
  220. directly (see below) about a problem, there are some things you NEED to
  221. indicate. Just saying, "The BBS won't answer the phone" doesn't help
  222. anyone figure out what type of difficulty you may be having.  THIS IS
  223. IMPORTANT.  Most of the people asking for help don't give enough
  224. information to figure out what the problem is, and it takes a few emails
  225. back and forth to extract the necessary information.
  226.  
  227. Be sure to indicate what type of computer you are using, and as much
  228. info about your modem as possible (if your problem deals with the
  229. modem).  Make sure you indicate what exactly the system did wrong, and
  230. say what you expected it to do.  If you can, tell what the system
  231. printed on the screen around the problem area.
  232.  
  233. If you have a problem which is of a nature that it cannot be handled by
  234. a support sysop, you can attempt to contact Wayne Bell, the author of
  235. WWIV. There are basically three ways to contact him:
  236.  
  237. 1. Call a WWIVnet bulletin board and send email to Wayne Bell.  Address
  238.    the mail to 1@1.
  239.  
  240. 2. Call Wayne Bell's bulletin board to leave feedback. The number is
  241.    310-798-9993, and the BBS supports 300/1200/2400/9600/14400 bps (HST
  242.    and V.32/V.32bis), 24 hours per day.
  243.  
  244. 3. If either of those choices is prohibitive (financially or otherwise),
  245.    you can send a letter (via US Mail) to Wayne Bell.
  246.

  254. Of course, sending mail in this manner is the slowest, for obvious
  255. reasons.  Therefore, if you can possibly send email through WWIVnet or
  256. call my BBS, do it.  Sorry, Wayne Bell does not give out his (unlisted) voice
  257. telephone number.  Do NOT address registrations to Wayne Bell as that 
  258. will only delay your registration process.

  264. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV v4 before v4.24:
  265.  
  266. 1. Into  your GFILES directory, copy: INI.STR, SYSOPLOG.STR, ENGLISH.STR
  267. (as BBS.STR), *.RIP, *.MSG, *.ANS.
  268.  
  269. 2. Copy the new *.EXE files into your main BBS dir.  Delete BBS.COM from
  270. your main BBS dir (it is no longer used).
  271.  
  272. 3. Copy the WWIV.INI file into your main BBS dir.  Many configuration
  273. options can be set here now.
  274.  
  275. 4. Make a "RIPMENUS" directory off your main BBS dir, and extract the
  276. RIPMENUS.ZIP file into there.

  280. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV v4 before v4.23:
  281.  
  282. 1. Copy in the new strings file.  From the distribution archive, copy
  283. SYSOPLOG.STR into the GFILES directory.  If the primary operating language
  284. is to be English, copy the ENGLISH.STR into GFILES and RENAME it to BBS.STR.
  285. Otherwise, copy the primary operating language there and rename it to
  286. BBS.STR.  Create separate directories for the other language *.STR files.
  287. For example, you might have ENGLISH.STR in GFILES and .\FRENCH\BBS.STR as
  288. well as .\SPANISH\BBS.STR if your BBS was to offer English, French, and
  289. Spanish as language options.  As more *.STR files are translated, they will
  290. be made available on SDS and Support Boards.   Please REMEMBER to change
  291. the name of the LANGUAGE.STR to BBS.STR before using it.
  292.  
  293. 2.  Copy the *.msg files into GFILES.  These files contain the menus,
  294. help files and so forth.  Since 4.23 offers options not found on the
  295. menus of earlier versions of WWIV, you will want to use these or at
  296. least use them as the basis for making your own menus.
  297.  
  298. 3.  Copy the *.MDM file and the *.DAT file into your DATA directory.
  299.  
  300. 4.  For information on using the multi-instance aspect of WWIV, see
  301. the Chapter in the documentation dealing with Fast Setups.  The
  302. registered sysop may also want to consult the chapter on WWIV source
  303. code, especially the later parts of the chapter which deals with the
  304. #defines available in v4.23.

  306. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV v4 before v4.22:
  307.  
  308.  
  309. 1. Convert your userlist.  If you are using the standard userrec
  310. structure (32 or 64 sub version), just run INIT, and tell it to convert
  311. your userlist for you.  Otherwise, you'll have to modify the CONVERT.C
  312. file included with the source, and compile and run it.  See the
  313. 'readme.423' file for details on converting your userlist.
  314.  
  315. 2. Copy in the new strings file.  From the distribution archive, copy
  316. SYSOPLOG.STR into your GFILES directory.  From the distribution archive,
  317. copy ENGLISH.STR into your GFILES directory, but name it 'BBS.STR'.
  318. That is, if you unzipped the archive into the current directory, and
  319. your gfiles directory is C:\WWIV\GFILES, then say:
  320.  
  321. COPY SYSOPLOG.STR C:\WWIV\GFILES
  322. COPY ENGLISH.STR C:\WWIV\GFILES\BBS.STR

  324. 3. Copy in the new menus.  Copy menus*.msg into your GFILES directory,
  325. such as "COPY MENUS*.MSG C:\WWIV\GFILES".

  333. To upgrade a previous version of WWIV that is already installed, first
  334. copy the "MODEMS.MDM" file into your DATA directory.  Then run the v4.21
  335. INIT program.  This will update certain data files with new formats.
  336. You will also probably want to go into INIT section 5, and select your
  337. modem type.  Refer to WWIVINIT.DOC to more information.

  341. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS OF WWIV v4 before v4.12:

  344. To upgrade a previous version of WWIV that is already installed, first
  345. run the v4.21 INIT program.  This will update certain data files with new
  346. formats.  You will also probably want to go into INIT section 5, and select
  347. your modem type.  Refer to WWIVINIT.DOC to more information.

  349. You will notice that this version of WWIV has an option for "WWIV
  350. Registration Number".  This is a number given to all registered users of
  351. WWIV, indicating that they have registered.  If you have registered WWIV
  352. before, but don't know your registration number, contact Wayne Bell
  353. through one of the channels listed above and ask what your registration
  354. number is.  You must be sure to indicate your full name and address, as
  355. well as the approximate date (month and year) that you registered WWIV.

  388. the WWIV Support Network alive since Eric Golden was
