The Netherlands has long been one of the main advocates of the EU. It supports both political and monetary integration, but failed in its attempt to rush through legislation enabling both during its EU presidency in 1992. Internationally, it has traditionally supported US and UK foreign policy, and is a member of NATO. The reunification of Germany and consequent rise in German power could see strong links with the US being weakened.
