  4.      You may need to set the filetype of TANKSDEMO to "archive"
  5.           (do this, as usual, from the filer menu). 
  6.      Use !Sparkplug to open the archive.  (Sparkplug 2.25 is also supplied 
  7.           on this CD if you do not already have it or SparkFS.) 
  8.      You may need to copy the contents to an ordinary disk or hard disk
  9.           and run from there, rather than from the archive.

  13. This is a limited demo version of TANKS.
  14.  
  15. TANKS is a multi-player combat game for RiscOS computers. The concept is
  16. simple, each player has a TANKS (Tactical Armoured Nuclear Kombat
  17. Station) that is placed somewhere on a hillside. By firing missiles over
  18. the hills, the player tries to destroy the other TANKS. The last one
  19. alive is the winner.

  21. Each time a player damages one of the opponents' TANKS, he is awarded
  22. some money. After each round of the game, this money can be spent on
  23. extra equipment for the TANKS. There are over 60 different type of
  24. equipment to choose from.

  26. There are also four different types of computer controlled player,
  27. offering a range of skill levels. Up to twelve players can join in, with
  28. any combination of human and computer players. There is a team play
  29. feature as well.

  34. Before playing this demo, use the supplied !SysMerge utility to update
  35. your !System directory from the supplied !System directory. Or double
  36. click the supplied !System to use that one temporarily. You don't need
  37. to do this if you have RiscOS 3.6 or later.

  39. To load the demo, simply double-click on the !Tanks application. It will
  40. load and install an icon on the icon bar. By clicking MENU over this
  41. icon, you can bring up the main menu. Most of the menu options are not
  42. fully functional in the demo version.

  44. Before you play, you should consult the draw file that came with the
  45. demo. This shows a diagram of the controls that you will use during the
  46. game, with each part labelled. Refer to this when reading the
  47. instructions below.

  49. To start playing TANKS, select the 'Play next round' option from the
  50. main menu. Then click on the icon labelled 'Click' in the small window
  51. that appears.
  52.  
  53. An intro screen will be shown. This shows some details about the players
  54. in the game. There will be one human player, and four computer players.
  55. Press the space bar to enter the game.
  56.  
  57. The TANKS will be dropped onto the landscape, and the human player will
  58. get to have a turn first. By clicking on the various controls on the
  59. dashboard (the coloured area at the top of the screen) you can select
  60. weapons and utilities, use them, alter the aim of your barrel, and other
  61. things.

  63. The selector at the right end of the dashboard allows you to use
  64. utilities. Utilities are anything that is not a weapon. To use one,
  65. click on the arrow buttons to bring the item you want to use to the
  66. centre of the selector. Then double click the 'USE' button.

  68. To fire a weapon, select it in the same way as for utilities. The weapon
  69. selector is the central one, the selector immediately to its left is the
  70. warhead selector. When you have selected a weapon to fire, you must
  71. select which warhead you wish to fire it with. When you have done this,
  72. double click on the 'FIRE' button.

  74. Usually your turn will end when you fire a weapon, but some weapons
  75. (shotguns and machine guns) allow you to fire more than one shot per
  76. turn. Experiment and see what all the items you have do.

  78. To alter the direction in which the weapon will be fired, use the arrow
  79. buttons on the section marked 'Angle'. These move your gun barrel left
  80. and right. If you click with MENU, these buttons will not auto repeat.

  82. If you are firing a missile weapon, you will also need to set the power
  83. of the shot. Use the arrow buttons in the section marked 'Power' to do
  84. this. Again, clicking with MENU stops auto repeating.

  86. If you get blown up, and want to hurry the remaining computer players,
  87. press CONTROL and Q, and the round will be brought to a quick
  88. conclusion.
