- Solving Common Startup Errors
- =================================
-
- The following section explains what to do when you have trouble
- using ModemShare immediately after installation.
-
-
- A. The 30 day evaluation version must be started from the directory in which
- it was installed (C:\INSYNC\MSHARE by default). When starting MSERVER.EXE
- (DOS or Windows v3.x installation) for the first time, you may see the error
- message: "Evaluation period expired, server not loaded". In this case, you
- may be starting MSERVER.EXE from a current directory that is other than the
- one in which you installed ModemShare. If you choose to create and then
- use the SERVER.BAT file to start ModemShare, it will change to the correct
- directory and load MSERVER.EXE from that directory. You may also use your
- own batch file commands to change directory (CD) to the INSYNC\MSHARE
- (by default) directory and then execute MSERVER.EXE from that directory.
-
-
- B. You might see the following error messages when starting up or
- restarting a ModemShare server: "ModemShare not loaded, server parameter
- error" (under Windows 95) or "XXX Interface Initializing failed.
- Connection Request" (under Windows v3.x and DOS, where XXX could be
- either IPX/SPX or NetBIOS).
-
- The 30 day evaluation version is licensed for 1 Port and 1 Server. These
- messages simply indicate that more ports or lines have been defined for the
- ModemShare server than your license allows.
-
- The way to correct this problem is to delete the excess lines that have been
- defined on the ModemShare server. Follow these steps to delete excess lines
- from the ModemShare server:
-
- Under Windows 95:
-
- 1. At the ModemShare server, click Start, Programs, INSYNC
- ModemShare, Parameter Editor.
- 2. Click Server parameters.
- 3. Click Line Definitions. Click a line to delete. The Line Detail
- window appears.
- 4. Click Delete Line.
- 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the number of lines on the server
- matches the number of ports for your license.
- 6. Click Done, then OK.
- 7. Click File, then Save parameters and exit.
- 8. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
- Under Windows v3.x and DOS:
-
- 1. Open the Parameter Editor on the ModemShare server. In
- Windows v3.x, double-click the Parameter Editor icon in the
- ModemShare program group. In DOS, change to the
- MSHARE directory and type PAREDIT <Enter>. The DOS-based
- Parameter Editor main screen appears.
- 2. Press Enter to clear the screen, then select Station Type by
- pressing Enter again.
- 3. Press Enter to select Server. The full path name for the
- SERVER.CON file appears. Press Enter to accept this default,
- unless you've created another parameter file for this server.
- 4. The Parameter Set Selection screen appears. Press Enter to
- select the default set "1," unless you've created another
- parameter set. The Server Parameters Options screen appears.
- 5. Use your arrow keys to scroll down to Lines, then press Enter.
- 6. Select a line to delete, then press F3 to delete it.
- 7. Press Y to confirm the deletion.
- 8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the number of lines on the server
- matches the number of ports for your license.
- 9. Select File, then press Enter. Press Enter again to save your
- parameter set. Press Q to quit.
- 10. Restart the ModemShare server.
-
-
- C. If you're running Windows 95 and using the NetBIOS or NetBEUI network
- protocol, you might see the error message, "Server is busy or
- unavailable." To correct this problem, you need to set a default
- network protocol so that ModemShare will transmit data packets using
- this protocol under Windows 95.
-
- Go to each ModemShare server and client that's running Windows 95 and
- follow these steps:
-
- 1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
- 2. Double-click the Network icon. You'll see a list of network
- items such as adapters and protocols.
- 3. If you're running LANtastic, click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS.
- If you're running the Microsoft(R) networking system, click
- NetBEUI.
- 4. Click Properties, then click the Advanced tab.
- 5. Make sure the box "Set this protocol to be the default protocol"
- is checked.
- 6. Click OK.
- 7. Restart each ModemShare computer.
-
-
- D. If you're running LANtastic v5.x or 6.x on any of your ModemShare
- servers or clients, and some servers don't appear to be available when
- you run Monitor, Remote Server Monitor or Port Status & Setup, you may
- have exceeded the multicast address table limit of your adapter driver.
-
- Follow the steps below to turn off multicast addressing on each
- LANtastic v5.x and v6.x computer on your network.
-
-
- 1. Use a text editor such as DOS EDIT to open your
- STARNET.CFG, which is located in your LANTASTI directory.
- 2. Under the AILANBIO section, add the line:
-
- NO_MULTICAST
-
- 3. Save your changes and exit the text editor.
- 4. Restart the computer.
