- 00000: This is XBBS.TXT, where almost all of the text spewed forth by
- XBBS comes from. You can, and should, edit this file to
- personalize (or at least render less irritating than this one,
- which is mine). Just use a text editor (not word processor)
- like QEdit and hack away (check in XBBS_???.DOC under
- INDEXER.COM for some more info). I've tried to note most of the
- fields in this file by putting comments beside the number of the
- prompt. Not all the help prompts are filled in (see way down
- toward the bottom of the file).

- ;
- "Threading" refers to following a chain of messages and replies to those
- messages. You can work [F]orward or [B]ackward. You should be aware
- that Fidonet sometimes gets the replies before the messages... Quitting
- a thread takes you back to the message from which you began threading.
-
- Scanning messages lists the message number, from, to and subject fields
- of as many messages as will fit on your screen, then lets you decide to
- scan some more, stop, or read from a number.
-
- # lets you enter a new number at which to continue reading.

- Locate lets you enter some text to search for in the from, to and subject
- fields as well as in the message body itself.

- 00430: After-msg help
-
- This would be some help with the message reading prompts,
- if Hector had put some here...
- 00431: Upload help
-
- Uploading is a little more difficult than downloading. It can be
- different on various computers, so this help will be a little
- vague...you'll probably find more help in your terminal's documentation
- or help screens. Keep in mind, though, that the better the protocol,
- the easier the upload! ZModem is probably the best; XModem is the
- worst. XModem CRC is better than XModem CheckSum. If all your terminal
- has is XModem, it's probably time to find a decent terminal program...
-
- Basically, you select a protocol that your terminal has available, enter
- the name of the file you want to send, then when XBBS tells you to go to
- SEND mode, start sending the file. You might remember that this is an
- MS-DOS system, so filenames should be in accordance with MS-DOS
- conventions (up to 8 characters, a period, and up to 3 more characters).
- You will not receive credit for uploads for which you gave the wrong
- name (and, in fact, they may well be refused completely). Please do -not-
- send games unless they are something extremely special. Do not send crap.
- You will not be credited for it. If you don't know what crap is, ask the
- sysop.
- 00432: Download help
-
- Downloading is pretty simple. First, you'll need to select a protocol
- to use. Some protocols are better than others; if you have ZModem, I'd
- use that. XModem Checksum is the -last- thing to pick. Check your
- terminal help or documents to see which protocols you have available and
- pick one of those.
-
- Next, you'll enter a filename (in most cases). If XBBS tells you
- that Wildcards are acceptable, it means the protocol you've chosen can
- receive more than one file in a session. Wildcards are the ? and *
- characters. If you don't know how wildcards work, you should avoid them
- until you've looked it up in your DOS manual.
-
- After selecting a protocol and filename, XBBS will tell you to go to
- RECEIVE mode. Remember, when you are downloading, you are receiving a
- file from me. Activate the appropriate protocol on your terminal and it
- should become automatic.

- 00505: ANSI graphics choice help
-
- ANSI Graphics are escape sequences used by some terminals to communicate
- position, color and other special information not normally transmittable
- via modem. Most IBM-compatibles come with a file called ANSI.SYS which
- can be installed in their CONFIG.SYS files as a device
- (DEVICE=ANSI.SYS). Some other computers have terminal program options
- which can translate ANSI sequences. If your computer/software can
- handle ANSI, answer Yes to this question. Otherwise, answer No.

-
- FTN-style addresses have the form zone:net/node.point@domain.
- An example would be 1:380/16.0@Fidonet. An address uniquely
- identifies a node and allows the message to be sent to the
- proper destination, just as the address on a letter you send
- by the mail does. You'll often see addresses like this in
- parentheses at the end of * Origin: lines in echomail.
- In some cases you can abbreviate the address you're entering.
- For instance, if you're communicating with a local node (in
- the same net as this BBS), you can just enter the node number.
- If they're in the same zone, you can just enter net/node. If
- you're replying to a netmail message, you can just hit [Enter]
- and I'll take my best guess about where the message came from,
- but if this is a "new" message you'll have to enter something.
- If this seems overwhelming and totally foreign, write your
- sysop and ask for more detailed information. Or hold your
- breath and Hector will be with you in a millineum or two.

- 00545: Help with entering address for Bulls' nodelist scanner
-
- You need to enter an address or partial address. FTN-style addresses
- have the form zone:net/node.point@domain. An example would be

- the message to be sent to the proper destination, just as the address on
- a letter you send by the mail does. You'll often see addresses like
- this in parentheses at the end of * Origin: lines in echomail.
-
- If you enter a zone followed by a zero net (1:0 for example), all net
- hosts for that zone will be listed. If you enter a zone and valid net
- (1:380 for example), all nodes in that net will be listed. If you enter
- more than that (1:380/16, for example), only that node will be listed.
-
- Keep in mind that this system doesn't have information on every address
- in the FTN universe, so you may come up with a blank. Don't despair, it
- can't hurt to try.

- Fido: Fidonet type 2 packets are about the smallest possible format
- you can download. You'll need to get your sysop to give you
- a point id first; ask. There are many free programs to unpack
- the packet into a variety of message base types for your use.
- Ick: QWK is about the most foolish thing ever concocted. Almost all
- readers cost money. Packets are inordinately large. Avoid if
- possible.

- If you have ANSI graphics on and fancimenus enabled, you're using a
- pulldown menu system. Use your left and right cursor keys or numeric
- keypad (NUMLOCK can be on or off, but turn it on if your cursor keys are
- giving you trouble and use 4 and 6 for left and right) to change the
- highlighted selection on the top bar. When what you want is
- highlighted, press the down arrow (or 2, or [Enter]) to pulldown the
- options under that selection. Note that options with ... trailing
- lead to totally different menus, by convention. Now, with the pulldown
- in place, use your up and down cursor keys (or 8 and 2) to highlight
- what you want to do, then press [Enter]. The left and right arrows at
- this point will cause the pulldown to vanish and move to the previous
- or next option. At any time you can "shortcut" and press the first
- letter of an option.
-
- In other words, it works about like your local software that uses
- pulldown menus works.
- If you aren't using the pulldowns, what you see is a basic
- tree-structured menu. Picking one of the primary options (Msgs, Files,
- Utils, etc.) leads to another set of subchoices (Read, Write, Download,
- etc.). You select options by entering the first letter of the option
- you desire.
