  186.           Alas,  because of conflicts between UUCICO and C-Kermit under
  187.           OS/2, kendra's anonymous Kermit server has gone to the great
  188.           lilypad in the sky.  Use anonymous UUCP, below, instead.

  193.           The files available on kewgate can be downloaded via anonymous
  194.           UUCP.  To use anonymous UUCP, define entries for the system
  195.           kewgate in your SYSTEMS file and PERMISSN file.  The  SYSTEMS
  196.           file entry should define the phone number as 1-617-641-4817, the
  197.           user id as "nuucp", and the password as "nuucp".   kewgate
  198.           accepts anonymous UUCP phone calls between midnight and 5 AM any
  199.           night, and between 10 AM and 4 PM weekdays.1  All times are
  200.           Eastern.

  202.               Note:              Note:              Note: Beginning with release 1.11m of UUPC/extended, the
  203.                     sample systems file in the documentation archive
  204.                     includes an entry for kewgate.

  210.           The files are located in the home directory for nuucp, so files
  211.           should be requested via the UUCP command with the syntax
  212.           ~nuucp/filename.  For example, to retrieve the index for the
  213.           archive to your local /tmp directory, issue the command:
  214.  
  215.                uucp  kewgate!~nuucp/index  /tmp/
  216.  
  217.           The UUCICO program must then be invoked to actually process the
  218.           request.  Users should retrieve the file index first, and then
  219.           issue additional requests for the actual files wanted based on
  220.           the current directory listing.

  223.                     kewgate.  Higher debug levels will impact performance,
  224.                     affecting your transfer rate.  In some cases, this will
  225.                     affect performance sufficiently to cause the connection
  226.                     to be lost.  In addition, verbose connections fill the
  227.                     hard drive on kewgate with useless debugging
  228.                     information, causing the system to hang.

  246.           the ibm.os2/listings area on BIX.  For additional information,
  247.           contact him (userid hamilton) on BIX.  Tell him Snuffles sent

  253.           The archives are loaded to CompuServe's UNIX Forum (GO
  254.           CIS:UNIXFORUM).  The files can be searched for within the forum
  255.           using the keyword UUPC.  As not every release is loaded to
  256.           CompuServe, contact the UUPC/extended Help desk (from CompuServe,
  257.           >Internet: help@kew.com) before downloading files from CIS which
  258.           are more than two months old.

  260.           Because of CompuServe's six character limit on file names, the
  261.           files uploaded to CompuServe do not follow the normal
  262.           UUPC/extended naming convention described below.  Rather, the
  263.           files are named UUPCx.nnn, where 'x' is the archive suffix as
  264.           described below and 'nnn' is the version number.  Files should be
  265.           downloaded as UUPCnnnx.ZIP to restore their normal DOS names.

  271.           Software for a copying fee.  Crynwr Software charges $20 for
  272.           UUPC/extended without the OS/2 files, $30 gets you the OS/2 files

  274.           MasterCard.  Foreign checks should be drawn on a US bank.  Add 7%
  275.           New York sales tax if you are a New York State resident.  Add $2
  276.           for foreign postage.  Add $2 if you are using a purchase order.

  364.                          CHANGES.PRN file included in the documentation
  365.                          archive. These file is not created if the
  366.                          current release has limited changes; for all
  367.                          releases, CHANGES.PRN is the definitive summary
  368.                          of changes.  (Only available on kewgate and

  392.           describing UUPC/extended and various configuration file.  Most of
  393.           the configuration files are samples and must be modified to be
  394.           used. The files in the documentation archive are as follows:

  396.                README.PRN provides an overview of UUPC/extended.
  397.  
  398.                REGISTER.PRN describes how to register UUPC/extended to
  399.                encourage us to keep putting out this insanity.

  404.                INSTALL.PRN tells how to install or upgrade UUPC/extended

  420.                CHANGES.PRN is a list of recent changes to UUPC/extended
  421.                (fixed bugs and enhancements).

  423.                MAIL.PRN is the documentation file for the MAIL command.
  424.  
  425.                TILDE.PRN is used to generate a text file printed by the
  426.                help (~?) command when sending mail.
  427.  
  428.                UUSTAT.PRN is the documentation for the UUSTAT program.
  429.  
  430.                BUGS.PRN is a list of known bugs in UUPC/extended.
  431.  
  432.                UUPC.RC defines the system information related to
  433.                UUPC/extended, such as the system name and work directories.
  434.                Only one UUPC.RC file should exist per PC.

  436.                PERSONAL.RC defines the user information related to UUCP,
  437.                such the user id, (mailbox) of the user, the user's full
  438.                name, and the directory to store mail in.  If several people
  439.                share the same PC, then multiple PERSONAL.RC files may exist
  440.                under different names.

  442.                PERSONAL.SIG is a sample signature file, which is appended
  443.                to each mail file you send. Use of this file is optional,
  444.                but highly recommended.
  445.  
  446.                SYSTEMS defines the telephone numbers and login information
  447.                for other computers the local PC can call.
  448.  
  449.                PASSWD defines both remote systems that can call the local
  450.                PC and all local users.
  451.  
  452.                PERMISSN defines access for remote systems accessing your
  453.                system via UUPC/extended.  It is based on the format of the
  454.                UUCP PERMISSIONS file.
  455.  
  456.                SAMPLE.MDM is a heavily commented modem configuration file
  457.                which explains the use of the various fields in modem
  458.                configuration files.  Other modem files are also included.
  459.  
  460.                HOSTPATH defines routing for hosts that are not directly
  461.                connected to the PC.

  463.                ALIASES.TXT defines short aliases for common addresses,
  464.                allowing a short nickname to be used in place of the full
  465.                name and mail address of a person.

  479.                MAIL.EXE is the mail user agent (MUA); it is used for both
  480.                sending and receiving mail.
  481.  
  482.                UUCICO.EXE acts the mail transport agent by exchanging files
  483.                with other systems via the serial port (modem).  It can both
  484.                call out (active polling) and wait for another system to
  485.                call (passive polling).
  486.  
  487.               Note:              Note:              Note: Some versions of the MS-DOS required archive also
  488.                     include an alternative version called UUCICOF.EXE.
  489.                     This module performs the same function but has a more
  490.                     advanced serial communications driver which supports
  491.                     serial ports with FIFO buffering.  However, UUCICOF may
  492.                     not work on some systems.
  493.  
  494.                UUXQT.COM processes requests received via UUCICO, invoking
  495.                RMAIL.COM or other programs to process data.  It should be
  496.                run after each UUCICO.EXE invocation.
  497.  
  498.                RMAIL.COM is called by both MAIL.EXE and UUIO.EXE to deliver
  499.                mail; as such, it must be called RMAIL.COM.

  510.                FMT.COM is a simple program to format text by wrapping it
  511.                after 72 columns.

  513.                GENSIG.COM randomly appends quotes or other user selected
  514.                text to the end of a fixed signature file.
  515.  
  516.                NOVRSTRK.COM is a program which removes overstrikes from
  517.                files for viewing on a terminal.  It's use is described
  518.                above, and is optional.

  520.                UUPOLL.COM serves as a driver for UUCICO and UUXQT, invoking
  521.                UUCICO to answer the phone and/or dial out on regular basis
  522.                and then automatically invoking UUXQT to process any files
  523.                received; this permits unattended operation of
  524.                UUPC/extended, allowing it, for example, to call another
  525.                system in the middle of the night.

  527.                UUCP.COM copies binary files between two systems without
  528.                going through mail.
  529.  
  530.                UUSTAT.COM is a utility to report on and update the status
  531.                of jobs queued for other systems.
