- WHAT IS RIM
-
- RIM works only with Robo-Board 30x30 icons. It is not compatible
- with Microsoft Windows icons.
-
- RIM is the FIRST 3rd-Party utility for the Robo-Board software
- as programmed by Seth Hamilton. RIM 3.0 offers the following:
-
- ■ Ability to view and edit up to four icons at a time
- ■ Ability to copy, delete, rotate, combine, swap, and flip icons
- ■ Ability to combine multiple icon library files (.ICO)
- ■ Ability to extract 1 or more icons from one icon library
- and create a new icon library, or add the extracted icons
- to an existing icon library.
-
- The ability to combine icon libraries is a big plus to both you
- and your callers of your Robo-Board. This is discussed below.
-
- The ability to extract icons, is an excellent capability.
- For example, let's say you get an icon library from a friend
- that contains 50 icons, but you only want icons #12, #35 and #44!
- With RIM's extraction capabilities, you can easily select which
- icons you want from that library, put them in a new icon library,
- or append those icons to your existing library!
-
- HOW IT CAME TO BE
-
- RIM was no more than the cause of a brain fart I had when I was
- dealing with multiple Robo-Board icon files. With version 1 of
- Robo-Board's icon editor, there is no means in which to manage
- icons. That is, take the icons in one icon file and place them
- in another, or better yet - to combine multiple icon files.
-
- In comes RIM, a simple to-use program with a friendly interface.
- You simply give it a destination icon file, then specify which
- icons you want in it. Hit a few keys and begin designing your
- .RBO screens. The benefit of having all of your icons in one
- single file is that it speeds up the displaying of your screens
- to the caller and the caller will like the fact that his/her
- Robo-Term directory is not filled with hundreds of small .ICO
- files.
-
- With version 3.0 of RIM, I implemented some of my own wishes in
- an icon editor, specifically, the ability to view and edit four
- icons on the screen at one time so larger images could be created.
-
- ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
-
- I would like to thank the following people:
-
- My beautiful wife, Kristine, for her patience, love, and putting
- up with my all-night programming marathons.
-
- Seth Hamilton for the best bulletin-board system ever created.

- CAUTIONS
-
- As with any new software, especially with software that modifies
- existing files on your hard disk, remember to back up your icon
- libraries prior to using RIM. I have never had a problem with
- RIM corrupting icon libraries, but there's always a first for
- everything so I thought I'd put a notice here so I could say
- "I told you so!".
-
- NAMING CONVENTIONS
-
- I recommend that you maintain consistency in your icon file
- naming. For example, at BBS++, the icon file is named BBSPP.ICO.
- A good suggestion is to use the name of your system in the file
- name, such as OURHOUSE.ICO for the Our House BBS.
-
- Using this file naming convention, the caller can easily determine
- which icons belong to which Robo-Board. This way, when the user
- stops calling a particular Robo-Board, they can delete the approp-
- riate icons from their hard disk thus saving hard disk space.

- COMBINING LIBRARIES
-
- RIM allows you to combine multiple (2 or more) icon library
- files into one single library.
-
- RIM prompts you for a destination icon library name, with
- a default of "NEW.ICO". You can change this to any other
- name at this time, or leave the default.
-
- If the destination icon library name already exists, RIM will
- ask you if you want to Overwrite the file, Append the new
- libraries to it, or Choose a new file name. If Overwrite is
- selected, the destination file name specified will be removed
- from your hard disk prior to creating the new icon library.
-
- Next, RIM will display a list of icon libraries found in your
- RIM icon path. Select as many icon libraries you want
- to combine using the "ENTER" key to select each one. If you
- want to clear your selections, press CTRL-U. This will deselect
- all icon libraries.
-
- Note, the order in which you select the libraries is the order
- in which the icon libraries will be placed in the new library.
-
- Once all icon libraries have been selected, press the F10 key
- to combine the libraries. RIM will ask you if you to confirm
- your selections, then process the libraries.
-
- The new icon library will be located in the destination path
- specified above. To view this new icon file, use the RIM
- icon editor utility.

- VIEWING ICONS
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- RIM's icon viewer is a powerful full-featured icon viewer which
- allows you to view up to four icons at a time with the registered
- version! (up to two icons with the unregistered version)
- The viewing and editing of the icons is done in text mode (not
- graphics) mode, using the 50x80 VGA screen resolution.
-
- ICON COLORS - IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
-
- Due to the fact that RIM operates in TEXT MODE and not GRAPHICS
- MODE, RIM is unable to achieve two colors available only in
- graphics mode. These two colors are 1) Dark Green and 2) Light
- Brown. The first color is an extremely dark green (darker than
- normal green). The second color is a light brown color, almost
- like a "skin" color. RIM compensates for this by using the two
- text mode colors not used in graphics mode. The two lines below
- notes these changes to be aware of while viewing/editing icons:
- ┌──────┐
- │PLEASE│ Pixels colored MAGENTA signify an actual pixel color of DARK GREEN
- │ READ │ Pixels colored CYAN signify an actual pixel color of LIGHT BROWN
- └──────┘
- Please be aware of the above color conversions. The icons will
- only appear in this color when viewed in RIM. Once transferred
- to your .RBO screen or viewed in the Robo-Board icon viewer, the
- colors will not be "re-defined".
-
- FITTING FOUR ICONS ON THE SCREEN AT ONCE
-
- Since each icon is 30 pixels high, and the highest VGA screen
- resolution is possible is 50 rows high, there is no way possible
- to fit 4 icons on the screen without some drawback.
-
- RIM has overcome this drawback by implementing a "shorty window"
- feature. This is done by making two of the four icons appear
- with 18 of their 30 rows. Which two icons are "shortened" is
- completely based on your preference. You can, at any time, use
- the ALT-T key to toggle between having the top or bottom icon
- windows shortened.
-
- With this ability to overcome the screen size limits, it could
- then be possible to view up to 6 icons on the screen at any one
- time with two more "shorty" windows! Maybe in the next version!
-
- CHANGING FOCUS
-
- "Focus" means the currently selected icon. When an icon is
- "in focus", it means that you can begin changing the attributes
- of that icon ONLY, such as editing, rotating, flipping, etc.
- When an icon window is in focus, the window's number (above or
- below the window) is in the color of White-On-Red, otherwise
- the color will be Black-On-White.

- Using these keys, you can scroll the viewed icons forward through
- the library incrementing by the number defined by ALT-S (Skip).
- For example, if two icon windows are visible on the screen, hitting
- one of these keys will skip ahead 5 icons, if ALT-S (Skip) is set
- to 5. See ALT-S below for more.
-
- DOWN and LEFT Arrow Keys
- Using these keys, you can scroll the viewed icons backwards through
- the library decrementing by the number defined by ALT-S (Skip).
- For example, if two icon windows are visible on the screen, hitting
- one of these keys will skip back 5 icons, if ALT-S (Skip) is set
- to 5. See ALT-S below for more.
-
- TAB and Shift-TAB Arrow Keys
- These two keys allow you to change the focus to the next (TAB) or
- previous (SHIFT-TAB) icon. For example, if there are 4 icon
- windows visible, hitting the TAB key would change focus to the
- second icon window, then the third, fourth and finally, back to
- the first icon.

- VIEW KEYS
- INS
- Hitting the INS (Insert) key will allow you to insert or Append
- a new icon into the current icon library. Once the INS key has
- been pressed, you will be presented with two menu choices:
- 1. Insert an Icon
- Will prompt you for the NEW icon number. All icons after
- this number will be "pushed" down one place, and the icon
- library will grow by one icon.
- 2. Append an Icon
- Will automatically add a new icon to the end of the icon
- library. The icon library will grow by one icon.
-
- DEL
- Hitting the DEL (Delete) key will mark the current icon in focus
- as deleted. All "X"'s will change color to a dark gray on black
- and a "DELETED" notice will appear on top of the icon to remind you
- that it is deleted. All icons marked for deletion are not actually
- removed until the library is processed via ALT-P (see below) or
- when exiting the library (it will prompt you to save changes).
-
- ALT-A
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature allows you to swap one icon with another. For
- example, let's say you want to swap icon #10 with icon #15.
- Using this feature, it's a snap!
-
- ALT-C
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature allows you to combine two icons together. The
- first icon chosen will be the "bottom" icon with the second icon
- chosen being laid on top.
-
- ALT-D
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature allows you to choose which icons (by number) you
- want to appear in the four icon windows. This feature is only
- available when four icon windows are present. You will be
- presented with a pop-up window with four numbers, 2 on top of
- 2, displayed similarly like the icon windows are displayed.
- Enter the numbers of the icons in the four small black boxes,
- moving from box to box by either the ENTER key or the TAB key.
- Shift-TAB will take you back to the previous box.
-
- ALT-E
- This key will put you into the icon editor, see next section
- entitled "EDITING ICONS" for more information.
-
- ALT-J
- This feature allows you to jump to a specific icon number.
- A pop-up will appear, enter the icon number to jump to, then
- press ENTER. That icon will be displayed in the first icon
- window with the other icon windows displaying the icons after
- the "jumped to" icon.

-
- ALT-K
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature allows you to copy one icon to another (or replace
- one icon with another). RIM will prompt you for the two icons
- by number (source and destination icons) then proceed to copy.
-
- ALT-L
- This feature allows you to load a new or different icon library.
- If changes have been made to the current icon library, you will
- be prompted as to whether or not you want to save those changes
- before loading a new icon library. Select an icon library by
- using the up and down arrow keys to highlight, then press ENTER
- to select the desired library. Speed-keys are accepted, just
- type the first letter of the library you want to highlight.
-
- ALT-P
- This feature will process all changes made to the current icon
- library. These changes include all pixel changes, icon deletes,
- inserts, rotates, flips, etc. This is automatically processed
- upon exiting the icon viewer, if you answer Yes to the question,
- "Save your changes?".
-
- ALT-S
- This feature pops up a box which allows you to change the number
- of icons to skip when using the Right/Left/Up/Down arrow keys.
- The default is: 1
-
- ALT-T
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature is only available when 4 icon windows are shown on
- the screen. ALT-T toggles between having the top two windows
- shortened and the bottom two being shortened. The reason why
- two windows have to be shorted is because the screen layout is
- only 50 characters high, and two icons take up 60 characters.
-
- ALT-W
- This feature changes the number of active icon windows on the
- screen. Available options are 1 window, 2 windows, or 4 windows.
- The default is: 2
-
- ALT-X
- (REGISTERED FEATURE ONLY)
- This feature tags the currently selected icon for extraction.
- This feature provides the same ability to extract icons as the
- "Extract Icons" feature from the main startup menu but allows you
- to mark the icons visually. Icons are not extracted until you
- exit the current icon library, or use ALT-P. ALT-X will place
- the word "EXTRACT" in the upper-left hand corner of the icon to
- alert you that the icon is marked for extraction. You cannot
- edit icons marked for extraction.
