  2. RAH Humor Review: Mystery Science Theater 3000

  5. How many times have you found yourself watching an incredibly cheap,
  6. stupid, and/or boring movie on television?  It's happened to all of
  7. us, for whatever reason - the plot was lacking or non-existent, the
  8. special effects were cheap, and the acting could have been done
  9. better by chimpanzees.  But, instead of finding something better to
  10. watch we deal with it anyway, criticizing the movie at every point.

  12. Enter Mystery Science Theater 3000.  The idea of this program is
  13. simple: take these really bad movies ("Santa Claus Conquers the
  14. Martians", "Gamara vs Guiron", "Fugitive Alien", etc.) and heckle
  15. them.  The show has become very popular since its first season in
  16. 1989 for a couple reasons.
  17.  
  18. First, there is an interesting cast of characters in an equally
  19. entertaining setting.  It is based in the future and the main
  20. character, Joel, is sent into space by his bosses at the "Gizmonic
  21. Institute".  Their purpose is to subject Joel to these movies to
  22. analyze his reactions.  Fortunately, Joel does not have to watch them
  23. alone.  Using various parts of the ship (the "Satellite of Love")
  24. Joel creates Crow, Tom Servo, Gypsy, and Cambot.  However, by using
  25. these parts to create the robots Joel has no control over when the
  26. movies begin or end.

  28. Meanwhile back on Earth, Dr. Clayton Forrester and his sidekick, 
  29. Frank, prepare each week's film for Joel and the robots.  Our heroes
  30.                                        respond by mercilessly ripping
  31.      __         ~~~        ^   ^       the movie to shreds.  Our view
  32.     /  \       /   \       (###(       of the movie is from behind 
  33.     \  /      <    |     (~~\  /       them in the theater.  We get
  34.      ||>       \   |      ~~~||        to see every gesture and hear
  35.     /  \       /   \       /~  ~\      every comment.  Occasionally
  36.  /~~~~~~~~\  /~~~~~~~~\  /~~~~~~~~\    there are intermissions when
  37. |Toy boat! ||Toy boat! ||Toy boat! |   Joel and the robots return to
  38.                                        the main part of the ship
  39. where they do parodies which annoy Dr. Forrester and Frank even more.

  41. Another appealing thing about Mystery Science Theater 3000 - or
  42. MST3K - is that the heckling is very good.  Their jokes and puns come
  43. from a variety of sources.  While Joel and the robots watch a film
  44. you will hear references to such things as the Wall Street Journal,
  45. Don King, "Spinal Tap", "2001", and a variety of actors and
  46. situations.  The writers of this show are culturally literate and up
  47. to date in current affairs.  Many of the puns made are often about
  48. the slightest details in the movie, such as tire tracks in a field in
  49. a barbarian film.

  51. Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a witty, comical production that has
  52. found new life for old, cheesy movies.  It is a show that must be
  53. seen to be fully appreciated.  MST3K can be seen on Comedy Central,
  54. available from your cable service provider.  Check local listings for
