- 4. WHAT DOES THE GAMMA DESIGNATION MEAN?
- ----------------------------------------
-
- Welcome to the (far too) long-awaited gamma release of RA 2.50.
-
- 1. It will only run if registered. If you want to
- run it and you're not registered, there is a
- section in this document which explains how to
- register.
-
- 2. It contains most, if not all new features that
- the final 2.50 release will contain,
-
- 3. It may contain some bugs. That doesn't mean it
- hasn't been tested thoroughly, but the first
- version of any major software upgrade usually
- has a few that slipped by beta testing,
-
- 4. It does not contain full documentation, rather
- it is supplied only with a detailed list of
- changes since the last public release (2.02).
-
-
- 5. HOW TO UPGRADE FROM 2.0x
- ---------------------------
-
- The upgrade procedure is straightforward:
-
- 1. Some of the file structures have changed.
- If you use any third-party utilities that
- read or write MESSAGES.RA, FILES.RA,
- MGROUPS.RA or FGROUPS.RA, check with the
- author of those programs to make sure
- that they are compatible with RA 2.50.
-
- 2. Backup your entire BBS, in case things go
- wrong and you need to back out of the upgrade,
-
- 3. Read the WHATSNEW.250 file to familiarise
- yourself with the changes in this release,
-
- 4. Replace the .EXE and .OVR files in your RA
- system directory with the ones in this archive,
-
- 5. Change to your RA system directory and run
- the 20XTO250.EXE utility supplied in this
- archive. This will upgrade your language files,
- as well as your message/file group and area
- definition files.
-
- 6. Run RACONFIG. This will update your CONFIG.RA
- file. Go into the language editor, and for
- each of your defined languages, update the
- following language prompts:
-
- 116, 665 - 672
-
- 7. If all went well, you'll now be running the
- 2.50 gamma release.
-
-
- 6. WHAT ABOUT THE /PRO VERSION?
- -------------------------------
-
- The Commercial version will be available, with full documentation and
- as few bugs as possible, at the same time the full 2.50 (non-gamma)
- version is released. I anticipate that this will take approximately
- 4 weeks from the date of this gamma release. I apologise if this
- inconveniences some people, but as someone once said, "it's the only
- way to be sure". /Pro owners should receive notification of the new
- version shortly.
-
-
- 7. THE FUTURE OF RA
- -------------------
-
- I realise that this gamma took way too long in arriving. Since I
- returned to Australia, I have been busy with a number of other
- projects, not the least of which was expanding Wantree into the
- Internet Access Provision arena.
-
- 2.50 will most likely *NOT* be the last DOS version. As long as there
- is an active user base for the product, it will not be discontinued.
- In other words, as long as people continue to register and/or buy it,
- it will live on.
-
- There is a ton of discussion about a 32 bit version of RA. This seems
- like the appropriate forum to set a few facts straight; there *will*
- be a 32 bit version of RA in the not-too-distant future. Platforms
- high on my list of priorities include OS/2, Win95 and NT. Unix would be
- nice, but there are a number of other issues there.
-
- That just about does it; thanks for your continued support, and I hope
- you enjoy this gamma release!
