- SUMMARY
- -------
- QUICKFAX reads messages and converts them into a format suitable for
- faxing. QuickFax requires a command line fax software such as QLINK
- (which probably came with your fax card) that is capable of sending a
- FAX via "command-line" functions. Check your FAX manual for details.
-
- First create a message area to receive the messages to be faxed. The
- message area may be in a Fido (*.MSG), Hudson, Squish, Jam, or EZYCon
- format. You may make this message area either local or allow others
- to send echo mail to the message area.
-
- Also for those that are registered user of Silver Express by Hector
- Santo, you can use the FormTols utility and use Fax forms. See file
- 115-Fax for sample files.
-
-
- SETUP
- -----
- 1. Place the QUICKFAX files in any directory you wish. This
- directory must contain the following QUICKFAX files:
-
- QUICK.EXE
- QUICKFAX.CFG
-
- Depending on the method use for checking you will also need:
-
- For LIMITED Checking (see below for further description)
- LIMITED.LST - a text file listing allowed numbers to send faxes
-
- For PREFIX Checking
- PREFIX.LST - A text file contain a list of allowed telephone
- prefixes to send fax message to
-
- For DEFAULT Checking
- SECURE.LST - A list of users that can send faxes to local
- distance numbers
-
- NUMBERS.BAD - A list of numbers that NO faxes may be sent to
-
- Once executed, QUICKFAX will generate a log file called
- QUICKFAX.LOG (original huh????) in this directory.
-
- 2. Edit the configuration file QUICKFAX.CFG either by running QUICKFAX
- with out any parameters and choosing MAKE CONFIGURATION from the
- menu using any text editor. You must be very careful to provide
- the following data:
-
- (NOTE - In the examples the "/" commands are just examples that
- may or may not be supported by your software. Only metachars
- preceeded by " ^ " are used by QUICKFAX).
-
- Required Data Example/Options
- ------------------------------------- ---------------
- Line 1: SYSOP Name Joe Smith
- Line 2: Name of your BBS The Great BBS
- Line 3: BBS Telephone No. (615) 555-1212
- Line 4: Location of BBS Anywhere, WY.
- Line 5: Message base directory FC:\MSG\FAX\
-
- For Fido Message base (*.MSG) directory:
- F<full path> (FC:\MSG\FAX\)
-
- For Hudson Message Base (QuickBBS, etc.):
- H<base #><full path> (H019C:\BBS\)
-
- [NOTE: BASE # MUST CONSIST OF 3 DIGITS]
-
- For Squish Message Base:
- S<full path> + name of *.SQL file
- (SC:\SQUISH\MSG\Fax)
-
- For JAM Message Base:
- J<Full Path> (JC:\MAIL\LOCAL\)
-
- For EZYComm
- E<MsgBase><Path> (E0005C:\MAIL)
-
- Line 6: Path to fax software C:\FAX\
- Line 7: Temp files path C:\FAX\
- Line 8: Bad messages path C:\FAX\BADMSG\
- Line 9: Fax text conversion command
-
- QuickFax produces a TXT format file. If no conversion is required
- then enter NONE.
-
- If it is necessary to use a second program to convert the TXT
- (text) file into another format:
-
- 1) Include all commands & necessary parameters. Use ^F to
- indicate the file name for example
-
- CONVERT C:\fax\^F /T
-
- 2) If the Output file name is required you may use ^O to
- indicate the name of the convert file. For Example
-
- MakeFax ^F ^O
-
- (NOTE: it is recommended to give the path if the
- files to be faxed are stored in a different directory
- than the fax software)
-
-
- Line 10: File extension fax file .QFX or NONE
- Line 11: Send Fax command
-
- Once again include all commands & necessary
- parameters. Use ^F to represent the file name and
- ^P for the phone number.
- FAX /S: ^F /N: ^P
-
- Line 12: Errorlevel for successful fax 0
-
- Line 13: Method for Checking - LIMITED, PREFIX, DEFAULT
-
- Limited a file, LIMITED.LST, contains a list of numbers to
- which faxes are permitted. Faxes will only be sent to these
- numbers. This is the most sercure but limits users to pre-
- selected numbers. Can be used for ALL Phone numbers.
-
- PREFIX - a PREFIX.LST file contains a listing of phone prefixes
- to which faxes are permitted to be sent. If allowing long
- distance or international call be sure to including any special
- strings and country codes. For example 1-01-676. Can be used
- for ALL numbers.
-
- DEFAULT - Checks the phone format, MUST be in either the XXX-XXXX
- or 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX format. 1-800 numbers are automatically allowed
- for long distance calls. If a call is determined to be long
- distance then Secure.lst name is checked to see if the user is
- allowed long distance service. Finally a list of numbers in
- NUMBERS.BAD is checked to see if this is a blocked number.
-
-
- 3. Edit your BBS batch file to execute QUICKFAX upon exit. A
- file called FAXIT.BAT will be created in the fax software
- directory (Line 6 of QUICKFAX.CFG). QUICKFAX also creates
- a text file of the message in the same directory. To send
- the fax, execute FAXIT.BAT and your fax software will take
- this text file and convert it to a fax compatible file (by
- using the command and options in Lines 9 & 10). The file
- will then be faxed (using the command and options in Line
- 11).
-
- Example .BAT file:
-
- ....this is where BBS exit occurs
- REM ... Check for fax
- CD \QUICKFAX
- QUICKFAX /A
- IF EXIST C:\FAX\FAXIT.BAT GOTO FAX
- GOTO DONE
-
- :FAX
- CD \FAX
- CALL FAXIT.BAT
-
- :DONE
- ...continue from here
-
- 4. Edit the text files as appropriate for you Checking Method.
-
- a. LIMITED.LST - an ascii text file listing the prefixes in a column.
-
- b. PREFIX.LST - an ascii text file listing the prefixes in a column.
-
- c. For DEFAULT -
-
- Edit SECURE.LST, which contains a list of names that have
- authority to send a long distance fax. This file MUST exist
- even if it is empty. If the name does not appear in the
- list then they will only be able to send a local fax and a
- fax to 1-800 numbers. If a message is entered for a long
- distance fax and the person is not allowed to, then the msg
- will be moved to the BAD directory and an entry made in the
- QUICKFAX.LOG.
-
- Finally edit NUMBERS.BAD. As you might guess this is a
- list of numbers that you don't want FAXES sent to or
- attempted to be sent to. Why? Well unfortunately someone
- may want to send a 100 faxes to your local Police Chief
- who in turn may get upset with you :). Or any other such
- numbers. Even if empty this file must also exist.
-
-
- USAGE
- -----
- To use QUICKFAX, just enter a message in the designated message
- base. You MUST enter the following information on the SUBJECT
- line of the message:
-
- xxx-yyyy / <Subject of Fax>
-
- Where xxx-yyyy is the destination of the fax. If only a number
- is listed then the Default Subj line of 'RE:' will be added.
-
-
- EPILOG
- ------
- You will have to look through your FAX documentation carefully
- to ensure you have the proper command line input for CONVERTing
- the text files to fax compatible (if required by your software)
- and SENDING the fax. Studying examples and typing in commands
- by themselves may give a "help" listing of options.
-
-
- Running QuickFax
- ----------------
- QuickFax can be ran either from the menu or from the commandline.
- Using the command 'quickfax' will give you an easy to follow menu with
- program information as well as a setup menu and fax generation.
-
-
- To run it as a nightly event from a batch file use the command
- 'quickfax /a'. This will allow for full automation. Using the
- command 'quickfax' will give you an easy to follow menu with
- program information.
-
-
- Register Users
- --------------
- Make sure the file, Quickfax.key is in the same directory as
- the Quickfax program.
-
-
- Hints
- -----
- Some fax software may have difficulty running in a Desqview
- environment. The memory requirements for Quickfax have been
- kept to a minimum. However some fax software allow for you to
- set as a parameter the time when you would like for the faxes
- to be sent out. If your software supports this feature then as
- the third fax parameter enter the command required by your
- software ie /T:2300. Now you can set an event to send the fax
- at a later time and the memory usage will even be less.
-
-
- QuickFax has been tested and regulary used with BGFAX and Silver
- Express. For example Silver Express setup files see 11-FAX.ARJ.
